Hi all, hope someone can help:

I have just signed up to Sky Broadband, and I have no trouble connecting my MacBook to it wirelessly, but I am also trying to connect my older iMac (using OSX 10.3.9) using the Airport Extreme wireless card... and this is where the problems are occurring.

The connection on the iMac is very temperamental and drops in and out. Restarting seems to have no effect. I have tried changing the channel on the wireless router and this has not fixed the problem. I've also downloaded the Airport Extreme Driver Update from Apple and this hasn't worked either. I have no concerns about the signal strength from the router, as when the connection is made the Airport icon indicates a full strength signal.

If the connection has gone down and I try to connect to my Sky network, I am prompted for the password even though it is stored in a keychain. When I input the password I get a message that there was an error connecting to the network. Again, I know the stored password is correct because of the times that the iMac will connect successfully.

I'm totally at a loss with this, as are Sky Tech Support! Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks.

Edit: I should add that I'm using the Sky-provided Netgear wireless router if that makes any difference.

I have the Netgear router from Sky and I'm pretty familiar with it. Never had any issues with the wireless connectivity but I can suggest a few things to try:

- change the channel that the router is broadcasting wi-fi on.
- try it temporarily without wireless security
- change the type of wireless security

Post back with any changes from trying the above

Hi mrplow. Thanks for the quick reply.

I've tried changing the channel before but that only worked temporarily and then the same problems happened again.

I've also changed the security from WPA to WEP, but then I lost the MacBook wireless connection too, and had to plug the MacBook into the router with the wire to change the settings back.

Not tried no security at all - even if that works it'll only be a short-term fix won't it? Don't want to leave it unsecured... although I suppose it'll help pinpoint what the problem is. Will give it a go later.

Sky connection problems

Hi

I too have just signed up to Sky Broadband and have a Macbook running 10.4.11

I use my Macbook at my office connected to the net by built in Ethernet. When I get home and try to connect to the web the mac can see the router and Airport show a full strength signal, but when I open Safari and try to get on line site info comes up in the address bar and the blue progress bar gets stuck, after a minute or so Safari then says it can't connect.

I've tried calling Sky tech support and they're useless, they just tell me to refer to Apple!

Could there be an issue with me using the Macbook and work and then wirelessly at home? I can connect to free WiFi hotspots without a problem.

Any ideas?

Be very cautious changing anything to the antiquated, easy to crack WEP protocol and those old operating systems have received no Apple Security Updates for years. Do not use them for banking or anything at all confidential.

I had a couple of faults on my FTTC line last year and they were both due to bad joints. As I could hear noise on a new analogue phone I reported them as voice faults and they were resolved by voice engineers. Once the line was quiet the FTTC settled down and has been fine ever since.
