Using Canon Camera in Catalina

Looking at upgrading to Catalina but it says it only accepts 64 bit & when I looked on my computer it showed items for my camera were 32 bit ( Canon Digital IXUS 960 IS ) do any of you guy’s know if there is anyway round this problem that enables me to carry on using this camera in Catalina or should I stay with Mojave.

Catalina only supports 64-bit applications. You should first see if there are updates available and if so, upgrade and then confirm the apps are 64-bit. You can then safely upgrade to Catalina from Mojave. However, if there are no updates to the application for 64-bit support, then you cannot do anything about it if you do upgrade to Catalina anyway.

Your camera was introduced in 2007, and its CameraWindow software last updated at the end of 2017. It's unpredictable wether Canon will update their software for 64 bit compatibility, and if so when. This is assuming you are using the Canon application shipped with the camera. No driver is needed for your camera.

Why not try using Mojave's Photos application? If you get on with it Catalina's Photos application will function with your camera and you can upgrade.

If/when you upgrade to Catalina, it's always wise to backup via Time Machine first.

There have been reports of people who needed to roll back to Mojave when Catalina didn't work out for them, but couldn't use their Time Machine backup. Catalina is doing something different with Time Machine backups if it touches them, and that may be causing the issue. A full backup with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper would be well advised as a safety net, in addition to a Time Machine backup. Macworld has a good article about downgrading.

EDIT: I should add a thought to this... in addition to making sure your Time Machine backup is current before upgrading to Catalina, disconnect the Time Machine backup drive and DO NOT USE Time Machine until you are certain that Catalina will work for you going forward. Once Catalina starts using that Time Machine backup, you can't auto restore from it using an older macOS version if you decide later to roll back.

Since getting my first digi camera in 2005 (Kodak then Lumix x 2), I've only ever used the photos app supplied with the operating system. The photos stored in Windows transferred smoothly when I moved to Apple in 2011. There's surely a way to import existing images from the Canon app into Photos; then import directly into Photos from camera or SD card (if there's a slot...).

Besides using photos.app that has already been mentioned, I can't see any problem with using Image Capture.app that may actually be easier to use and manipulate with the importing. But sure be surprised if it didn't work in Catalina with that camera.
