How do I insert a fraction such as 1/2 into a text document in PAGES

I don't use Pages very much...so there could be an easier way...give this a try:

- Apple Drop Down Menu
- System Preferences
- click on Keyboard
- Keyboard tab
- check the box "Show Keyboard and emoji viewers in menu bar"

- Now go to the menu bar
- Click on the Keyboard icon
- choose "Show Emoji & Symbols"
- In the search field type "Fra"...and you should see some fractions.
- Double-click on the fraction(s) you need & they should show up in the Pages document.

Hopefully the fractions you need are there.

Very nice solution, Nick.

One could also go into System Preferences > Keyboard >Text, and add a rule - replace 1/2 with ½.

This also applies to any other fractions you want, eg, 3/4 ¾

Also thanks for the 2nd solution Ian...there usually is more than one way to get things done. The solution you mentioned seems more permanent.

Ian's solution is very handy, because not only is it permanent; it also transfers itself to your other Apple devices, so once you have set up your keyboard shortcut on your Mac, it's also available on your iPhone.

I keep all sorts of junk in k/b shortcuts, such as sharp, flat and natural for music posts accessed by adding a forward slash to the word.

There is a further method for adding characters directly by using Unicode Hex Input as a keyboard entry method. Once added, you can type any character by selecting "Unicode Hex Input", holding down the "option" key and typing the 4 digit hex string for the required character. Example, to type 1/3 use $2153: ⅓

First, head to System Preferences/Keyboard and add Unicode Hex Input



Then select the entry method from the menu bar



Use this table to find the hex codes



Note that as you type the digits, you will not see any result on screen. The character will appear as the last digit is typed.

Thanks Kevin. The setup is a bit different with 10.14.5 (Mojave) but the result is the same. By the way, where is a good place to find or copy the hex codes?

This one is as good as any:

BTW, when there are less than 4 digits in the hex string you need to pad the string with leading zeros, so ½ would be $00BC. Don't type the dollar sign. It simply signifies hexadecimal to those who care about such stuff.
