I hooked up my Kodak camera to download for the first time. I used the Image Capture app. It took about 4 times plug/unplug to get
the Mac Air to see anything. Then another 3 times it couldnt import...then it finally worked. Do other people have trouble with this???
Its about a 10 year old camera.

If the camera has a SD or CF card, you are better of using a separate reader to grab the images off of it. Assuming your MBA is recent, your camera is quite old and flakiness is just part of it.

Wow, a 10 year old digital camera. Ten years ago the first iPhone was released which gives you an idea how far technology has come in that time.
So the usual suggestions apply. How is the connection cable you are using? Given it worked after a few tries I would suspect the cable first. Does it work first try now? Have you been successful connecting it to other devices?
As for the transfer speed, that maybe the fault of the camera hardware itself. How do you usually offload your photos? Does this camera have a removable SD Card?
Which camera is it?
Sorry more questions than answers.

A ten year old camera could be the issue. Did the camera ever allow downloading to a computer? If so where you using the same app? Is there a possibility the camera needs a firmware update if that is even available. What version of OS X is the MB Air using? What year is the MB Air? Have you ever had issues with the USB port on the MB Air reading any other device?

A lot of questions I know!

Do NOT format the SD card once you remove it from the camera. It is likely formatted as FAT16 or FAT32 at best for use on the camera. If you format it, you will lose all of you pictures. Just plug it in to your Mac SD slot and your Mac will find it and make it visible in Finder.

+1 for that, and if you were to reformat it for macOS it very likely would not work at all in the camera.

I use a Minolta Dimage X50 camera on a regular basis.
Just looked it up on the net - couldn't believe it - that camera is actually 15 years old.
I like it because it's small with no lens sticking out and both an optical and digital zoom.
Works perfectly after all those years.

Uses an SD card which the Mac reads happily.

I tried using a cable and software to get the pictures off the camera but that never worked well.
A big problem was the software that had to be installed in the Mac.
But my Mac now has an SD slot and reads the SD card from the Mac directly.
Before that I used an SD card to USB adapter whih worked as well.

AS mentioned a few times already - DO NOT FORMAT the card in the Mac.
If you do it before you save the pictures elsewhere, the pictures will be gone.
And if you do it afterwards, the card probably won't work - I know it won't on the Minolta.
If you need to format the card you need to format it using the camera formatting option.

This thread is so sad. If 150-year-old cameras, or pre-WW2 box Brownies can still produce photos, it's horrible that a ten-year-old one is considered obsolete (much like Apple condemning a 2015 MB - another thread - as unrepairable. My first digi camera - a Kodak Z470 bought in 2005 - still works for my teenage goddaughter. It is 5mp, the same as my iPhone 7 but has far better specifications and flexibilty for zoom, close ups etc. I guess most people just want an all-in-one device.

I would not want to insinuate that a 10 year old digital camera is obsolete, that is blatantly untrue, there're some great cameras in that classification like the the Olympus Pen E-P1 from 2009. One of the first true compact mirrorless digital cameras. What I did think was a 10 year old perhaps unused USB cable may be suspect and the camera software may require updating for todays computer compatibility. Still, Image Capture did work after a few tries so maybe it was just the connection. At the end of the day if one has the option to access the SD card via built in reader that's definitely the easy way to go.
