Sometimes I get these circles with Xs right beside my images when I transfer them from my CF card.
Today, there was a bar thing on the bottom of some as well.

It's strange because it doesn't happen to all my images. Only some.

My camera is a Canon 5D Mark 4.
I'm using a card reader to transfer the images to my desktop.
My iMac is only a several months old.

Thanks so much!

What programme are you using - Photos, Preview or a non-Mac such as Lightroom, Photoshop or Canon picture software? Guessing it's suggesting something 'wrong' with an image (focus, exposure etc), but that's not something available in Photos.

Does anything show or give a hint if you mouse over or pause your pointer over the X?

And the and answers to Sue's questions might help solve your question.

Have you clicked on the "Xs right beside my images"? Does it do anything? What Mac OS X/OS X/macOS version are you using?

Sue,
I'm guessing Preview?
I put them in folders on my desktop. When I double click, the folder opens and I view them from there,

Yes, and it does nothing.
Hovering over them does nothing as well.
I'm running High Sierra 10.13.4

Regardless of x, are you able to open the images and work with them? If so, just ignore.
Suggest you try importing to Photos which has a good edit suite and filing system for albums. This will save cluttering the desktop with folders. You will have to tell your Mac to use Photos rather than Preview.

This is frustrating not knowing what those X-in-a-circle icons are for and it's not even my Mac!!!

Out of curiosity, they all still there?

I am just wondering if they just showed up during the transfer as not completed or something and have now disappeared with a successful transfer…

Also, did you use the Finder or some Canon app to transfer the files from the card reader to your Mac?

Has any other member even seen those x's or know why they are there???

I'm also wondering if the "x's" are showing the photos are duplicates or something, and why do some photos seem to be flipped horizontally??? Some with her hand on her right cheek, then shown on the left cheek???

For info only, 10.13.6 is the latest version of macOS High Sierra. Might updating help??

Hisacorn

Have checked toolbar in various photo apps on my MBP (Photos, Preview, PSE) and seems your image shows a screenshot of the contents of a folder on Desktop in Finder. As these images don't appear to be in any Mac app, maybe you have imported using a Canon app; if so, that's where the answer will lie.

I was thinking the same thing the other day and I checked and tried with the Canon Apps that I do have, and also some of the Canon and Cannon/Mac support sites but came out blank.

I have a vague recollection of seeing similar icons some time ago but I can't recall why or what they represented. But something like "not completed" or "duplicate" or something keeps nagging at my brain.

Frustrating not knowing exactly. Must admit I don't do much Mac work with photos.

I think the "bar thing" is more of an issue. Maybe hisacorn could describe the process used to transfer the photos step by step and the make and model of the camera?
Also is this a new thing? Did it work well before, what if anything has changed since then?

They did in their #1 post:
My camera is a Canon 5D Mark 4.
I'm using a card reader to transfer the images to my desktop.
My iMac is only a several months old.

Pretty basic stuff if they are just using their OS X Finder and any standard folder I would think.

Oh oops, bit of domestic blindness there, sorry. I meant, the card gets put in the card reader, then what? Is the user using Canon software to open the card or Image Capture or what? Does the card display on the Desktop?

I also wonder if the card is still in the reader when he gets the Xs? Maybe the images are not copied to the drive yet?

That was one of my queries as well Bob.

We still don't know if the circle-X icons are still showing, or if posted, I missed it.

This is how I transfer:

Plug in my Targus card reader to the USB port on the back of the computer.
Insert my CF card into said card reader.
Transfer images by holding "shift" key and highlighting all the images I wish to transfer from the card onto the computer.
Drag the chosen images and put into a folder on my desktop.
That is when the circle w/ Xs show up.
Wait until the transfer is complete.
Drag card icon to the trash.
Remove card when icon is gone.

Yes, the circle Xs and bars are still there.

I am not using any software or programs to transfer the images.

That's not using Preview, then. Haven't a clue why the x-s are there. But how do you edit your images?

Going to experiment doing the same. I use Photos, occasionally Preview.

Nope, no crosses. Screen Shot 2018-10-17 at 11.01.37.jpg

Could it be something to do with the way the CF card is formatted? I'm grasping at straws here I know.
Personally I place great faith in Image Capture.
Hisacorn in your Applications folder is an Application called Image Capture. It is simple to use and native to the Mac. I would suggest that you load up your CF card onto the desktop as usual then launch Image Capture and use it to import the images just to see if they come out the same. You can save the images to your desktop as you usually do. I'm sure we would all like to hear the result.

Ditto Preview.

I would still like to know whether you can open the images with a x against them and what you do for editing.
