hi guys, I just bought a new MacBook Pro mid 2018 i5, and I installed high sierra in it. Is my only Lightroom option a recurring $9.99/mo plan? or is there another option that I can install locally?

There are a number of good editing options that can be installed locally. Depending upon your needs the Photos app included with your Mac may work nicely but there are others. See Photos overview here

Here's a brief overview of some alternatives

There's the Photos program as Slydude told you about and some very good third party apps besides Lightroom. You might want to take a look at Affinity Photo
and also Pixelmator Pro. You can find both of those in Mac App Store.

Thanks for that reminder Charlie. I've had both programs on my hard drive and didn't think to mention them.

I'm going to stick up for Adobe.

If you want the latest LR release then only the subscription option is available to you. You might be able to pick up some legacy software second hand though.

LR and PS are for me the best editing apps out there (they're industry stabdard for a reason), and you get both for your monthly fee. I don't particularly like the subscription model, but at least you are always up to date with the very latest software.

I've been tempted by Capture One (particularly since I switched from Nikon to Fujifilm), but the one-off cost is offputting as well as needing to learn a new workflow and skills at an age where I struggle with things like that!!!

Hey Nick...

Lots of folks are Adobe addicts. :) Seriously, Adobe has been the standard for years, however, the competition is strong. Both Affinity and Pixelmator have received very good reviews and are now the choice of quite a few photographers. Although, I'm betting the Pros still prefer Adobe. ;)

Thanks. I'll have to have a look at those.

It's just that I now find LR and PS easy to work through, and my library / catalogue and workflow are perfect for me.

I had a look a Capture One (trial version) and found it completely unintuitive (it might just be me being stuck in my ways mind!!), as well as not being able to do some things I take for granted in LR and PS.
