Hi everyone;

Being a brand new (about a month now), Apple/iMac user, and having tried to navigate the search function without any luck, I am looking for a decent photo editing app that won't break the bank.

Would any of the members here care to offer their favourite photo editing choices? It would most definitely help out an old man who just switched from 25 years with PC's to the iMac platform, which I think is quite marvellous by the way.

Thank you for any assistance with this.

Bud

Welcome to Mac-Forums and the world of Macs.

To frame the discussion, are you looking for professional level photo-editing or amateur/enthusiast level? If you've been using apps on the Windows side of the world, which ones where they?

Not being a photo editor myself, I can however suggest a few for you to research..

* Pixelmator (around $30)
* GIMP (Free, Photoshop equivalent functionality with ridiculous learning curve)
* Photoshop (monthly from $9 to $80)
* Affinity ($40)

Have you tried the editing functions that are already available in the free Photos app that is on your Mac? Unless you're into photography in a serious way and need a much more powerful editor, the edit ability of the "Photos" app should be more than sufficient.

If you do need a more powerful editor, try the suggestions given above by our moderator.

Hi Bud and a very warm welcome to our Forums.

Why not start with the app which comes with your Mac - Photos?

Photos is both a library and a photo editor. It has likely got everything you want.

You haven't mentioned which Mac you have (Model, year, specs) and which Operating System - I'm kind of assuming that as you are a "brand new" user, that it is macOS High Sierra. But, of course, that may be incorrect if your Mac is second hand.

Photos has been around for some time now and to get you going, here are some links on how to use it:

Please post back with details of your Mac and OS. Also any specific questions you have.

Photo Editing Software/App

Thank you very much for your kind and fast reply, and the welcome..

I have been a fairly heavy and exclusive user of PhotoShop in the past but I'm open to anything that's not too difficult to get used to. My tired old brain just can't handle too much technical jargon anymore so the easier the better for me these days.

I'm going to take your suggestions and go and have a look and hopefully one of them will do the trick for me.

Thanks again for your help, and I hope to return the favour one day.

Kind regards

Bud

Photo Editing Software/App

Actually no, as I hadn't even noticed the Photo App on my iMac yet.

Thank you very much and I'll give that a look. The one thing I need a lot is a "cloning" tool, or "patching" tool as some software calls it.

Regards

Bud

Thank you for this. With all these excellent suggestions, it looks like I'm going to be busy checking them out for quite a few hours.

I'm certainly no professional at it, and so I just need an app that will make general improvements to some of my photos.

Thanks so much to all of you that have helped me with this, and I'll let you all know what I choose to use from all the great suggestions.

With kind regards.

Bud

Specs of my iMac

Hello again Ian;

I hope I've done this correctly and have found what you were asking about.

Here's what I found by clicking the "Apple" in the top left hand corner of my screen.

It's there in Photos app:)

I shall give that a whirl and perhaps won't need to go anywhere else.

Photos has some really nice features. Have a look at:

How to turn Apple Photos into a more powerful editing app

If you are a newbie, and you want something that's easy (and fun) to use, there is a product that I've always thought was awesome, that seems to get no word-of-mouth at all, and I don't know why:

Funtastic Photos ($30)
http://ohanaware.com/funtasticphotos/

And just so that you don't go away thinking that your choices are limited, there are a ton of other photo editors for the Macintosh, several of which have free versions:

Polarr Photo Editor Lite (free/$20)
https://www.polarr.co/mac/0?platform=polarr&label=homepage_website

PixelStyle Photo Editor (free/$30)
MAC Photo Editor – PixelStyle Photo Editor for Mac

InPaint ($20)

PhotoScape X (free/$30)
PhotoScape X for Mac and Windows 10

Affinity Photo $50
Affinity Photo – Professional Image Editing Software

ImageTricks/Pro (free/$10)

Pinta (free)

Graphic Converter ($40)

Thank you Randy, for this huge amount of information. I'm going to enjoy sorting through all this and I'm sure I'll find something that I can use.

I also appreciate how you folks have made an old man feel welcome here, so thank you all for that too.

I'm stuck on Aperture v3 - not actively using IBM/PC/Windows since 2014. My Photoshop v4-v5 skills came to a demise in 2011/2012

I should note that while there may seem to be a large number of photo-retouching applications for the Macintosh, and some are being offered for apparently very reasonable prices, some of these programs come from extremely disreputable companies located in far eastern countries where they take open source code, ignore the legal limitations on using that code, and add their own slap-dash graphic user interface and charge you as if they wrote the program themselves:

http://www.macworld.com/article/1153685/web-apps/speaking-spammers.html

You may want to avoid programs from the companies listed in the above article.
