Once iPhoto has the files stored on the computer you don't need them on your camera card. However I would always recommend that you back up your images ( and everything else as well). Time machine should back up your photo's automatically for you.

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
....but, it is good practice to keep many backups if you can.
-iPhoto data base gets corrupted.
-HD gets corrupted
-HD fails
all leads to a big :(

I keep all my photos in my pictures folder, many of which I keep in iPhoto too, as well as my 2 external HD backups.
1 with time machine and 1 with carbon copy cloner.

Photos are usually precious to most people, and it's not like the old days where we all have photo albums and negatives in safe storage.

+1 for redundant backups of photos. Like 6string stated, photos are heirlooms for some folks. I'm paranoid enough about losing photos that I even have most burned to DVDs for safe keeping. ;D
