As a graphic designer, let me tell you that learning photoshop from a book will not be easy, nor is the best way to learn photoshop! As stated above, tutorials are probably the best for self teaching methods, but if you are serious about learning the Adobe programs, take a class. Visit your local community college to see if they have digital imaging or computer graphics classes. They will teach you the basics of photoshop, illustrator, and a little bit of flash maybe. The rate of you learning will be 100x faster! May I ask what you'll be using photoshop for?

some good tutorial sites:

Good-Tutorials - Newest Tutorials
Photoshop Tutorials and Flash Tutorials - Tutorialized

also check youtube and deviantart.

First thing's first... before you try to learn anything you need to figure out what you want to use Photoshop for and why you need it.
Photoshop is a pretty expensive app to purchase and just "fool around" with it.

If you're into learning from books, I'd suggest "Classroom in a Book: Photoshop CS4" over anything. The way they explain everything is really simple to understand and they start at absolute basics and go through almost everything.

And just tinkering with it is a good way too. I find that experimenting is the easiest way to remember things. If you make a mistake, you find a fix and remember it quicker as u dont want to make the same mistake twice.

But as mentioned ^^, know what you want to do with it before you go ahead and purchase School, training or anyone certain book.
but if any books i recommend David Pouge : The Missing Manual CS4....
Great author and easier to understand..... More so than "The For Dummies" books.
Cheers
