hi all - first post :)
first let me say that I am not a switcher - I am a unix person and digital photography enthusiast, and I obviously got me a mac mini to use photoshop and the like.
I must say that I mostly like OSX so far :) definitely so much nicer than anything from microsoft IMHO. I just love to manage my files from the CLI :]
anyway, my mini came with tiger - and I don't plan to pay for leopard since I'm very happy with my mini as it is - but apparently 'preview' cannot open RAW files from the relatively new nikon D300... but iphoto and aperture etc all can do it just fine?
I don't like iphoto and find preview pretty useful so I'm baffled as to why one would get the update from Apple and not the other? or am I missing something here? surely I don't need to upgrade my whole OS to get the bundled tools to read a new file format?
thanks!

Hi,

As a photographer myself, I use RAW data a lot as this gives me freedom in exposure and colour correction.

For best results use Photoshop raw converter and for previews Adobe bridge is good.

The last update to Tiger was in November 2007 so you won't see any RAW updates for the OS.
All of the D300's we've shipped where I work came with (bundled by Nikon, not us) a free copy of Capture NX. Did you camera come with Capture NX? If so, have you tried it?

The D300 is a beautiful camera. I now have a new favorite DSLR.

yes the D300 is truly an excellent camera :)
but I'm a bit disappointed not to be able to get RAW support in preview :/
aperture feels a bit slow to me (but still otherwise very cool), but I manly rely on preview, DXO and photoshop so far, and as you all know old habits die hard..
speaking of which, DXO is ALSO incredibly slow with their OSX support (what are these people doing, the new version 5 for PC has been out for ages with D3/D300 support), which annoys me a lot since I bought the mac for DXO and photoshop!

Still no DxO support?

Hmmm.... I just got an e-mail from them a day or two ago to try a beta. Maybe it's for Leopard. I would visit their site and see if you can download something.

Am I the only one thats bought it and regrets it.
I prefer lightroom to be honest.

Actually your right. At the time of that post I would have said aperture. But since getting Lightroom, I find it was a lot easier to get what I needed, faster. And I like the interface a lot.
