Nobody has mentioned Find My iPad. You can't erase an idevice until you turn it off and for that you will need Apple ID and Password. Of course he may not have switched it on.

Raises an interesting question though:
How many of us have provided some sort of mechanism in the event of our demise to allow our important others to gain access to our devices?

That reminds me of a fellow who was so proud of the fact he had done just such a thing, and explained he had put all Necessary Things he felt any family member would need into a file called something like Alice in Wonderland or Winnie the Pooh that he told them about and left it sitting on his desktop of his Mac.
He didn't seem to understand his folly when I explained that they may have to log in to his Mac to access it if his Mac happened to get shut down.
Oh well, add another one I guess...
But a good and valid question Rod.

I have provided the login/password for my MBP to both of my daughters and advised them that on the Desktop is a Word file called "I am dead You need this." My wife has it, too, so I think we are covered. The Word document has passwords for my 1Password vaults, iCloud accounts and other information they may need to execute my estate.

My wife and my son both have my computer login user name and password but I also gave my son my Apple ID. Both my wife and my son know my password manager master password so everything is in that.
It's about as foolproof as I can make it. Even if my wife and I were to perish in a plane crash along with all our devices my son could still access my password manager which has all my wife's passwords listed as well.
Digital wills are gaining popularity but I was under the impression they were not yet entirely valid in some countries.

Google also have an unused/ inactive account service you can subscribe to where if there is no activity for a set period they notify nominated people of your account details. It is the only one I know of though.

Here in the US it depends on which state you live in. A written and notarized will done up by a competent family lawyer is always best. I don't trust those so-called do it yourself wills since laws (especially tax laws) can be complicated.
And for my good compadre Slydude:
The State of Louisiana has the most complicated family law of any state. (Actually designed somewhat after French family law)

This is what I have on the Google Inactive Account manager service; About Inactive Account Manager - Google Account Help
It would be handy if Apple and Microsoft had similar services which to some degree they do. Here is a good article on the subject which covers what to do in Apple's case if you have locked devices.
