You might want to give a program called Burn a try. The download link is on the right side of the page. When you launch the program there are several types of discs that can be burned. Once the program is installed do the following:

    1. Launch the program and click on the tab marked Video.
    2. Just to the right of those tabs is a drop doen menu that says something like VCD. Click here and set the type of disc to DVD. In the space next to the DVD icon you can enter the name for a DVD.
    3. Drag your video into the window or click the plus sign to add the video. When you go to add the video I think you will be asked to select a format (PAL/NTSC). If the DVD player is a US player choose NTSC.
    4. Burn will convert the video to MPEG. This may take several minutes. When it's done click the Burn button.

Burn produces a basic DVD that should play in most DVD players It behaves like a commercial DVD but without the fancy looking menus. If you need that we're going to have to step up into a paid program.

That process doesn't require an exteranlhard drive of any kind. You do need a CD/DVD burner to burn the DVD though. There are several reasonably priced external drives available. Here are some possibilities. Check the descriptions for more details about any that are of interest.

If this is a one time thing you could also transfer the file to a DVD and burn it from there.

Hang in there. If I lost my marbles every time I encountered one of these problems I doubt I'd haven any left. Of course, according to my wife, I don't.

What version of the OS are you running? If you're not sure, go to the Apple menu in the upper corner of your screen and choose "About This Mac. . ." The next window will tell ypu basic information about your Mac including OS version.

Sorry for your loss. Hope this project doesn't add too much to the stress.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask. If you have access to, or know someone who has access to an older Apple program called iDVD it produces some really slick looking DVDs complete with very nice looking menus.

Check for a PM I'm sending you.
