Saving an email thread as a file (not "archiving")
In the Mail 5.0 program, is there a way to save an entire email thread as one long email so that I could reference it later if desired? For example, I coach a softball team, and with any given message I send, there might be 5-10 responses that would be helpful to save as one document once the conversation has concluded.

I'm not talking about archiving it...I'd like to save it as a file (ideally "raw source" (i.e., as an email) rather than in the RTF format) in a folder on my external hard drive.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

I don't think you can save it as a raw email file using Mac Mail. I have done the same thing you're asking but I save each separate email as a text file which makes it easier to copy and paste together as one file.

There may be other mail programs which can save an entire thread as one file. I'm not sure but I believe it can be done with Thunderbird.

    So...

Mail 5.1 I just highlighted an email thread in my mailbox, clicked on File and Save As.. then selected RAW.. and it saved the entire thread.

Yes, it does work in 5.1. I didn't know that - I guess I got used to doing it the other way.

For those not using 5.1 ... you could have created a Smart Mailbox to do the same thing.

Just to clarify, when you highlighted an email thread, did all conversations in the thread appear highlighted (e.g., have a blue outline around the box containing the email), or was it just the top box in the conversation? Currently in Mail 5.0, I can only highlight one box (email) in the entire thread. Is that different in 5.1?

Also, pardon my ignorance, but what's involved in downloading 5.1? Is it as simple as downloading it and the technology applies, or do I have to create all of my email accounts from scratch? And even more importantly, what happens to the emails I currently have in my inbox? Thanks for your insight.

Run software update and your mail app should be updated to 5.1. Nothing will change with your accounts or saved email messages.
