Finding out where my harddrive space wentIs there a way in Mac OS X to find out how my harddive space is distributed? I have a 500 gig harddrive and I know that a lot of that was system files and then Final Cut was about 50 gigs but I"m down to 350 already and don't have anything downloaded. Where did all of my harddrive space go???? thanks

I've used TreeSize in the past to see where all my space has been taken up.
http://www.monkeybreadsoftware.de/Fr...TreeSize.shtml
Shows the sizes of all the folders in a tree view. It's "free" (donationware).Once you go Mac, you'll never go back.

It doesn't sound like you're missing a lot of space. After formatting, you lose 10% or more HD space, so you probably started at 450GB.
OS X is 11GB and Final Cut is 50GB so that would bring you down to 390GB easily.

you should also probably start with a df -h
a 500gb drive does not really have 500gb of usable space on it, since it's sold in base 10, not 2.mike

yeah i realize that a 500 gb doesn't mean that, but I'm down to 365 and the only big thing I installed was final cut pro. I just want to know where the other 30 gb or so went.

No, I understand that.. but even though I deal with storage daily I can't remember offhand just exactly how many base 2 gigs a base 10 500gig drive has
du is my preferred method. Or if you're looking for SINGLE large files then something like
sudo find / -xdev -size +1024 -exec ls -alh {} \; | sort -r -k 5mike
