Have you tried to delete Desktop Manager yet?
First advice I'd give, is to delete it and upgrade to Leopard as use the built in Spaces. Seems it would do the same thing your trying to do.
Also, make sure it's compatible for your Mac and OS....
If you have any older Mac OS's around, you could try Appleworks. (Panther and older) If not, check Ebay for iWork. Might be the cheapest way to go.
Yep. You shouldn't have any problems afterwards.
You need to use APM not GUID, for PPC Macs. GUID is for Intel Macs.

How many apps are you trying to open at once?
A couple things to try.
It's possible it could be just a corrupt preference file. Look for the systemconfigurations/networkinterfaces.plist in your home folder~ library/preferences/ and delete it....

Nope. Closest you can get is System Preferences in the Dock.
If you want a specific OS to boot everytime, then go to System Preferences/Startup Disk
Other than that, do what you've been doing. (hold option and select)
