I love the quote from Lily Tomlin.
Seems like a common theme for many, including Abe Lincoln - a favorite (of many) Mark Twain quip for me is quoted below:

"When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years."--Mark Twain.

Hi Nick - Twain had so many good ones! Probably in the early '90s, Hal Holbrook came to our town w/ his 'Mark Twain Tonight' single man show - he was just great, providing a most memorable evening of entertainment. Dave

    @ RadDave,

    Hi Dave,

I used your quotation at my father's funeral many years ago.

In fact, I got the quotation, which I thought was correct, completely wrong.

I was referring to the well known fact, as late teenagers, we think we know it all. In my case, because of WW2, I was born when my father was 36, so, naturally, when I started University at 18, my dad was 54/55 years old. He died at the age of 87.

At the funeral, I misquoted Mark Twain (unknowingly): I said, "when I was 18, I thought dad was out of touch with reality, but when I reached the age of 22, I realised how much he had matured in these 4 years."

So, your accurate quote means a lot to me.

    Ian

Hey Ian. From what I'm reading...seems you got the Mark Twain quotation mostly correct...mostly just some differences in the ages mentioned.

Maybe your version of the quote is a more updated version.

In Mark Twain's day...youngsters needed (or were required) to grow up more quickly (compared to more modern times)...thus Mark Twains 14 & 21 years old turned into your more modern-age quote of 18 & 22 years old. And if we modified the Mark Twain quote to be an even more modern (current day version)...maybe the original 14 & 21 years old would need to be something more like 25 & 30??...or more!

Purely out of interest, this quotation was used in the Jack Lemmon/Walter Matthau film "The Fortune Cookie" which I remember well.

Samuel Clement aka Mark Twain visited my home town of Newcastle NSW Australia in the 1890's and said 'An uninteresting town with a hospital at one end of the main street and a cemetery at the other'!

He escaped by train back to Sydney before the lynch mob arrived alas.

Hi Harry - from the first pic below, looks like Newcastle has 'grown up' since Twain's visit - Just curious since your 'home' (now) is listed as Nambucca Heads - had to check the map app - you're about 3 1/2 hrs by car north of the city - must be lovely there!

Back about 1990, we had a Gastroenterology fellow named E.G. Hewson (known as 'Ted') from Australia - we wrote a few papers together on esophageal motility - he returned to Newcastle to practice (not sure if he went into academics or private practice?). Dave

And more than one hospital at one end as well... at least according to google maps... ;-)

It certainly looks a lot nicer than his description as well.

No ~ no hospitals in the CBD at all.

On extreme right of the pic Dave is Fort Scratchley Jpaanese submarines shelled the steel works 31 May 1942 and the fort's guns engaged them.

not a quote as such, but the inscription on Spike Milligan's (a British - well, Irish actually - comedian and national institution) headstone reads:

"I told you I was ill"
