Parallels not recognizing usb footpedal/usb sticks.
    Hi all:

This is a recent problem that has occurred in the last few days. I'm not sure when Parallels will get back to me, so I thought I'd post here to see if anyone else has had this problem, and maybe get a quicker response.

I have a usb footpedal that I use for some work in operating audio files for some transcription work that i do -- It's called for the record/record player. The footpedal is better than using the keys to stop/start/ff/rw.

Well, in the last couple of days the footpedal isn't being recognized by Parallels (running windows 7 on el Capitan). Usually when I plug in a usb device it sees the device and asks whether I want to connect it to Mac or Parallels. In the devices menu of the VM there's a list of all the devices it sees, and I can check it to choose it, as I do with the footpedal, and all is well.

Well, a couple of days ago, when I checked the footpedal, it would disappear from the list and I wouldn't be able to use it -- sometimes I have to unplug it and plug it back in to the usb hub for it to be seen in the menu, at which time it's checked, and I can use it. Sometimes it doesn't recognize it at all, like this morning, when I restarted it a couple of times. I can operate the player with key combinations, but I don't want to do that as my first choice. In any event, when it is in the devices menu I have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it to work, which I didn't have to do before. As well, sometimes when I plug in a usb drive it won't be seen either -- either that or it will be in the devices menu, but when I choose it I sometimes get a message saying that it can't be connected; but again this isn't always happening.

So has anyone else come across this problem, and if so, do you have any suggestions on what's happening? I thought it might be the usb hub, but not sure. When I tried plugging in the footpedal to the usb port on the mac i got the some problem. But the usb ports work with other devices, so I don't think it's the mac. Not sure how to trouble shoot this. I'm thinking it's either parallels and something has gone wrong, or the pedal itself. But it works fine when its connection is seen.

Is there any way to 'reset' Parallels to possible take care of any kind of corruption that has taken place with it? I'd rather not just start swapping out devices and spend money unnecessarily. I'm running parallels 10 as well. Not sure if that's the problem either, because I haven't had any issues before; things ran fine.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

I don't have any solutions, but this just started happening to me as well on El Capitan. I have an APC UPC unit. I have always connected to it in Windows on Parallels to run a self test. Now, when I check the UPC selection in external devices, it just disappears. I don't know if it is a Parallels or OS X issue.

Contact th developer and ask are they working on updating the software for their products. May be an El Capitan incompatability.
Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

I have submitted a case to Parallels and apparently they are aware of the issue. Their solution in the meantime appears to be to disconnect and reconnect the device. Here's the link they sent:

Okay all -- got a new footpedal and that seems to have solved the footpedal operation problem but the old problem still exists:

When I plug in the footpedal i have to choose whether I want to connect it to my mac or parallels. I choose the VM, because that's what I use it for. When I go to the external devices option in the devices menu, it's there, but when I check it to use it it disappears. I have to reconnect the footpedal and then the footpedal will be checked and I can use it.

Same for my usb sticks. Either the MV will not see it, even if I've chosen it for the VM from the devices window that appears when a new external device is detected. I have to disconnect it and then reconnect it, and then It only says "storage device" checked.

I think i had this problem with version 10 as well. It seems to me that there is a bug in Parallels that's preventing this. Anyone else having this problem.

Even when I leave the devices in the usb ports and restart the machine, parallels doesn't see them. I have to disconnect and reconnect it, and in the case of my usb drives not even the mac sees it when the VM is shot down and restarted.

When I tell the VM to automatically connect certain external devices to the VM (in the configure option of the devices menu) it doesn't do that. I have to disconnect it and reconnect it to the usb port to have the MV see it.

    This is very frustrating.

Straitsfan, what version of Parallels are you running? When did you update to El Capitan?

Don't remember when I updated. In the last few months, I'd say; maybe in September. But the problem was my footpedal as well. Got a new one and that worked fine, and with the latest update to v11 the problem seems to have been taken care of so far.

Yes, the basic USB problem was fixed by the latest update to parallels 11.
