    I don't understand this. As an occasional London visitor, I find it speedy and efficient to buy my travel at the barrier using Apple Pay. No waiting ever, a record on your phone of all transactions and you get the same benefits (price cap, discounts) as with the pre-paid Oyster Card. Also means you don't have to work out what ticket to buy.

    Do US transport systems work in the same way?

    Depends on the city. In New York City where the transport system is similar to London, you can use Apple pay, a Metro Card, or pay as you go. As a kid living in NYC I remember using the old turnstile system where you would have to drop a coin in the receptacle before it would allow you to enter.

    I suspect most US cities that have mass transport and subways (underground) operate the same way.
