Looks like the Glyph and my new iMC have made friends after all - without much intervention from me !

Well done. Thanks for your perseverance. You followed the "rules". It paid off.

The "inProgress" message about needing an application is caused by the fact that TM labels the backup that is underway with the "inProgress" label temporarily, then changes it once the backup is complete. But an inProgress file is not readable because TM is still writing the chains of links to it (normally), and there is no other app that is affiliated with that extent. On the first backup, there are no link chains to update, but the name is still given as "inProgress."

Hope that helps understand what was going on.

Thanks again Ian for your interest in my little problem and for the s/w insight Jake, which despite having done 'some' IT studies, wouldn't have come up with your explanation.

Kudos to all for hanging in there and sorting this out. Great that members are getting the help they need as usual. On the other hand bi of a blow to the old ego, You mean forum operation doesn't come to a halt when I'm AFK for a bit.
