A Canon Pixma MG5760 (inkjet) operating with either El Capitan or Mojave. The Canon works wirelessly if it's in cooperative mood, but I can also use USB. Apple states that printer/scanner manufacturers no longer issue their own utilities because the MacOS now performs those functions. I know I can use Image Capture, and have viewed a How To video.

What other scanning apps that work with those two OS versions are recommended? Purely out of necessity, free or low-cost preferred. Thank you.

    Hi Hugh:

The best software is VueScan but unfortunately it's not free and definitely not low cost. We've looked around before to locate free or open source scanning software, but it seems that's hard to find. Same with low cost.

Maybe Randy might have a suggestion as he is usually more up on what's available.

I also use a similar Canon MX Pixma 944 wireless and all the free software works well over wireless, from:
    • the Canon print queue icon I keep in the Dock and just click the "Scan " option when needed
    • the Canon IJ Scan Utility2.app software
    Image Capture

Never had a problem with any of them or with any other networked Macs.

But it does look like Mac support is somewhat lacking for anything after Sierra:

My Mavericks use is looking better all the time.

    EDIT:
I sure hope Apple still supports printing and scanning with that Canon Pixma MG5760 with HS and Mojove as Canon doesn't seem to if I'm reading their support page properly:

Hey, look what I found and I also learned something.

Canon has different support sites for their products depending on the country one is in:

    Hi, Amber50ishau!

Welcome to The Canon Forums, and thanks for posting!

We appreciate your participation, though we need to let you know that your product appears to be a model that is not supported by our team here at Canon USA. The Canon Community Forum is hosted and moderated within the United States by Canon USA. We are only able to provide support for Canon products manufactured for and used within the US market.

We were, however, easily able to find what you needed at Canon Australia's web site. Just click HERE [ https://www.canon.com.au/printers/pixma-mg5760/support ] to find the drivers and software corresponding to your printer.
    Canon MG5760 - Canon Community

Sure enough, lots of Mac compatible Canon software available for your Canon Pixma MG5760:
MG5700 series Full Driver & Software Package (Mac)
    For macOS 10.14, macOS 10.13, macOS v10.12, OS X v10.11, OS X v10.10 Updated 01 Jan 0001 24 Sep 2015
MG5700 series Full Driver & Software Package (Mac) | Canon Australia

    Software for: 10.9 — 10.14
    https://www.canon.com.au/printers/pixma-mg5760/support

This all seems a bit more reasonable and I hope it helps.

If I had my way we'd still be using Snow Leopard . Seriously, I operate four different OS, from SLpd on an old white Macbook that still works like a charm, plus a partition on my older Mini, to El Capitan on a second partition on the older Mini, through to High Sierra on a MBkPro, and finally to Mojave on the new Mini. Each has its value, particularly as it relates to older software. The Canon printer however seems only to talk nicely with El Capitan and later.

I have downloaded the VueScan driver for Mojave, and the page states "You can test VueScan with your scanner for as long as you'd like without buying it first." Interesting. The downside is the massive watermark placed over the scan result, so essentially the 'free' software is next-to-useless.

I don't know if that will work with your Cannon Model as I didn't notice it listed as a supported printer.

As you say you can test it at no charge, and if it's like previous versions, it would imprint some type of watermark on the free scan.

It would be interesting to know if and how well the Canon Scanning software works for you, or compared to Image Capture, all in wireless mode.

Here is what I know of. I have not checked each and every product to see if it will work with the original poster's scanner. I leave that up to him. I also haven't checked the latest prices.:

The Image Capture application (in your Applications folder) often works with scanners that are standards-compliant (i.e. SANE/TWAIN):

Thank you Randy for the comprehensive coverage, and whilst I've only just started to get my head around the array of information, much appreciated. Meantime, I'm using the proprietary Canon IJ Scan Utility via USB which seems to work okay, but quirky in terms of how and where it wants to store images.

You should be able to set the default location option in its Settings, and do so seoerately for each type of scan (the left column) and set the choice in the "Save Settings" area of the Settings Window.

Of course, those default saving options to save can be overwritten during a scan if needed.

See their on-line manual if needed:
    Save Scanned Images Automatically
Scanned images are automatically saved in a preset folder. You can change the folder as required.

It's really nice that, because the Mac OS is based on a type of Unix, free and open source Unix drivers for just about every type of peripheral (especially standards-based peripherals) are available and work nicely.

They may not always be easy to find, or dead easy to install, though.

Especially with Apple's latest OS attempting to prevent such installs that makes installs so much harder.
