    recommended software for burning dvd
    Hi,
I recently discovered my MacBook Pro 13" mid-2012 can burn dvds. I'd like a recommendation for software that will work on this MacBook running OS 10.11.6
I looked in the application folder and didn't see anything like idvd. Is there another program hiding in plain sight?
    thanks,
    chris

This article covers several different ways to burn CDs/DVDs using software already on your mac. The screenshots may be just a bit different depending upon OS version but the steps are the same. There's also the free program Burn.

If your burning needs are more complicated you may find Roxio Toast useful but it's not free. I've used it for years but probably won't upgrade on the next release. I just don't burn enough DVDs anymore to justify the cost.

I've used all three methods. I often use Toast because I have it but, of the free stuff, I find Burn easiest. It's not that using the built-in tools are difficult it's just that every time I use that method I have to look up the steps. lol.

I have to agree. I like using Burn as well

DVDStyler and DVD Flicker, both of them are free.

    Burn won't open
I have just downloaded Burn, but when I try to open it I am told it "can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer”.

What do I do about this?

    (I have OS 10.13.6.)

Open Finder, locate the app, Right Click on it and choose "Open".

It's a security feature built into Apple. No problem with Burn. It's from a reputable developer.

Thanks, Ian, but I don't understand. The app came within a folder, and I've moved it to Applications. When I double-click on it (I presume that's what you mean by a right-click) I don't get a choice of open, but just the same message telling me it can't be opened.

    HI David,

No, that's not quite what I meant

Fine. It's in Applications. If it's IN a folder, open the folder - in any case locate the app. Now Right Click (or Control Click if your Mac is not set up for Right & Left Clicks); then choose Open.

    It's NOT a double click - it's a Right Click.

If you still run into problems, I'll post screenshots of the steps to take.

    Ah, CONTROL-click!

OK. I got a message saying "This app needs to be updated by its developer to improve compatibility", but it seems to be working. I'll try a burn later.

    Many thanks, David

    David,

    Great it's working.

The comment about "needs updating" is simply saying that it's a 32bit app and AFTER macOS Mojave, all apps will need to be 64bit.

But as you are on macOS High Sierra, no problems. And none on macOS Mojave either. Just the OS after that.

And the Control Click = Right Click IF and only IF you set up your Mouse or trackpad to have separate Left & Right Clicks (System Preferences > Mouse/Trackpad > Point & Click > Check box "Secondary Click)

If you don't want that - in other words, you want the Left & Right Clicks to do the same thing, then you need to Control Click to get the equivalent of a Right Click.

Thanks again, Ian. It seems that in spite of my long history of using Macs I still get baffled by the technology. Maybe it's because I've just turned 87!

    @David:

You may have downloaded an older version of Burn. The current version of Burn is 64 bit and should not have given you a warning about that it needs to be updated. Check which version you downloaded... it should be 2.5.1.
