Catalina Won't Install BC of FileVault
When I try to update to Catalina and choose a disk to land it I get this:

    Screen Shot 2020-04-24 at 8.38.47 PM.png

So when I try to turn FileVault off it takes forever and finally gives up and I get a dark screen with the arrow cursor and eventually I get a box that says a file won't allow file vault to be turned off. Tried this about 3 times.

Are you using ny of the Songs software which supports some of the features for their speakers? I did a quick search and saw several references going back as far as at least High Sierra that this software generates that error though there could be others. The solution seems to be to completely remove the offending piece of software.

BTW you do have more than enough space for Filevault to decrypt and expand yer ole right? I'm pretty sure that has to be done before FileVault can be turned off.

Yes, I do have space. I have tried to turn it off before and was unable to for that reason but would always got a dialogue box that said so. The install box above shows "715" GB available. I would think that's enough.

    ...no Songs software.

Why not create a macOS bootable USB installer, How to create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support As long as you have a current good backup of all of your important data/files, that will be all you need. Then you can boot from the USB and erase/wipe the internal drive prior to installing Catalina.

If you use Time Machine, there will be the option to import everything from your old Mac.
Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

Just noticed there is an error in my previous post. It should say Sonus software not songs.

Probably a typo on my part but I'm blaming it on autocorrect.

Depending on the size of the drive, and the percentage of data on it, yes it could take days. Especially if you're using the Mac as well.

    As above.....

All good reasons why we recommend not using FileVault.

After about 2 hrs of “decryption” I got this message:

    DDE0348F-7410-49D2-90C1-1896F6D91F6E.jpeg

    I am seriously annoyed now.

So if I have 1.02 TB of memory and 715GB available wouldn’t that be enough to copy and decrypt with Legacy FileVault?

Yes, unless you have another user account on the computer. Then you may need to unlock it before de-decrypting can work? That was why I mentioned this, #5.

No, when you put in your user Name and Password in, that goes you limited permission to read and or write to their account.
