mac os server. does it work on el capitan?
it says requires mac OS 10.15.... so does that mean I cant run it on el capitan? Ive read stories about to get it to work on el capitan, you have to pay for it on a mac with 10.15, then try installing it on el cap... then it will let you download an older version? this is goofy and makes no sense... and it's $20 bucks. funny its got a 1 star rating in the app store. lol.

I just wanted to try to turn my 2007 imac into a server.... is there some place I can download an earlier version legally?

    Lots of info here:
macOS Server | Apple Wiki | Fandom

And by the way, are you really complaining about $20.00 for an Apple server OS???

Anyway, I would suggest that a Google search can be your friend:
mac os server download - Google Search

And have a look at one of the hits here:
How to get an old version of MacOS server
How to get an old version of MacOS server - Macintosh How To

    EDIT:
PS: I'm not really sure, but I would suspect that you are really pushing things trying to run an old Mac OS server on a 2007 iMac, and I don't know if that's even possible.

id pay the 20 if it works. so far its unclear if it works on el cap. the app store says requires 10.15.... requires 10.15 to download it or to use it, or both? didn't want to pay the $20 and find out its not going to work.

I did some google searches. didn't want to visit so called mac sites/links I've never heard of...

your last link is one I visited. I'm not even running 10.15 on my mac so that is my first hurdle to overcome.... perhaps I can install it on an external drive... not ready to put 10.15 on my everyday mac yet.

I doubt seriously if you can run a Catalina server macOS from your 2007 iMac whether or not you install the server on an external hard drive. Anyway, wouldn't that defeat the purpose of having a server?

I want to run the server OS on el capitan on the 2007 imac. but I need catalina to download it. so I thought about installing catalina on my ext hd... since Im not ready to upgrade my imac with it yet. its unclear if I pay he $20 if it will run on el cap. its all pretty confusing I guess apple does not want me to buy the server. they could have made this easier to understand.

Can you contact the seller? I haven’t used the App Store in a while, but I thought there was a “contact seller” option?

I don't think I'd even try running it from what I've read from all the reviews of their latest versions. And it seems Apple changed a lot of things and removed other Features that makes it almost useless now.

At least the older versions, prior to Mohave's compatible version I believe, worked well for most users and also had all the useful server stuff that just worked.

I would doubt very much if it any older, compatible Apple Server OS version would be available from any Apple associated site these days.

I'm sure it would not as you say. However, there is eBay where he could find a sealed copy. Personally I would try to find a copy of Snow Leopard (10.6) server on eBay.

However, not sure member "macgig" would go for that.

Are you saying they can not contact Apple? I find that very hard to believe, since we all recommend members to contact Apple just about every day.

I don’t know if you purchase the new version, and if the old version also becomes available to you. I have always been able to download older versions of purchased apps, because I purchased the older versions.

You could always try it with a free app on your newer OS Mac, then try to install it on your older Mac. Just make sure the newer app was also available for El Capitan, and the new requirements state Catalina. So check the version history.

The instructions for doing exactly that can be found here:

    Good luck.
Sometimes I really wonder how Apple does its thinking and communicates with its users.
Apparently this seems to be the proper way.

I'm just going by some of the comments on some of the various Mac listserves, where some users stated that attempting to purchase the Mac OS server said they attempted to contact Apple and got absolutely no sensible reply.

Who would have thought the actual method of purchasing an older version was as outlined in the link I provided above???
    That's almost too bazaar!!!

@macgig Before we jump through hoops trying to get a server version on that Mac lets ask a more basic question: What server capabilities do you want/need to set up? Some server functions can be enabled by activating various built-in functions that are off by default on OS X.
