    Time Machine won't work
I just tried setting up time machine on my iMac. I want to back it up to my server. I click select disk, I click my server, I enter the password, then it goes back to select disk. This goes on for ever... Plz help!

What kind of server do you have? Time Machine will work with an external hard drive and most Time Capsules. It would appear from your description above that your server may not be supported.

NAS Server. It shows up in time machine and I can access it in finder. I also set it up specifically for time machine.

    Okay, thanks. Read below.

    (This from Apple

Time Machine can back up to an external storage device connected to your Mac or supported AirPort base station.
It can also back up to a Mac or network-attached storage device (NAS) on your network. ...
Network-attached storage (NAS) device that supports Time Machine over SMB.

Yeah, every time I click on it, it just goes back to select a drive, no error message or anything.

It sounds like your NAS is not compatible with Time Machine. Not much you can do about that.

What NAS is it? Maybe if we knew that someone might have a solution.

Nice find Jake. Looks like it should work after following the steps that are given.

I think that's 11, Patrick, unless my math skills have seriously deteriorated.

I think the suggestion in the article is what I did when I had TM on a NAS. You create a user on the NAS named TimeMachine, with a password, then mount the user as a drive to the Mac, configure TM to point to that user account and enter the password. At that point TM connects and starts to use the drive. The one caution is that the backup is a sparsebundle format, which I found to be slightly more fragile than TM on a direct attached drive. After losing a couple of TM backups completely, I gave it up as a bad idea and now use direct attached drives for TM and the NAS for other storage and backup. (Basically just a straight copy of what I want to the NAS. I use a couple of schedulers to perform the file copy backups for me automatically every day. Mostly pictures, so easy to do.)

TM does uses a sparsebundle file to store the backup on a network device. Typically that file will have the name of the computer that created that backup.

There is one thing you can try if you suspect that the sparsebundle might be causing the problem.
    1. Locate the sparsebundle file on your network device.
    2. Double-click the sparsebundle file. This should cause the file to open in the Finder. If you're lucky, a "drive" will appear on the desktop.
    3. Now launch Disk Utility. If all has gone well you can launch Disk Utility to run Disk First Aid and repair the problem.

You cannot examine the sparsebundle file directly in Disk Utility. As far as I can tell, you must perform step 2 if this is to have any chance of working.
