Fixing the Do Not Enter Symbol at start up
So after watching a few videos I used the command + R key at start up and it did allow me to acces disk utility and the OS reinstall. However, once in disk utility the Virtual whole disk was in red on the left and when trying to hit the repair button it says, some information was unavailable during an internal lookup.

I tried to upload the video I took and and attach a picture but I’m not too savvy at this stuff. Anybody have a suggestion? Thank you.

Mac details and operating system will be invaluable in order to help you. Sounds l;ike you have a failing/failed hard drive.
Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

Are you able to shutdown your Mac and then Start Up and have it run normally???

As Harry says, a bit more information would probably help.

Also... Does your Mac startup and run properly when booted up using Safe Boot Mode???

It won’t start up in safe boot mode. In safe boot, instead of a prohibitive logo is shows a folder with a ? Inside. However, it will start up with an external hard drive that has a copy of my old OS system but I can’t download updates.

Also, I replaced the old HD, but the computer doesn’t recognize the new hard drive

As mentioned earlier, you need to include more details of operating system involved and versions and how are you formatted the new drive etc. etc.

a folder with a "?" Inside = Incomplete or non-blessed Mac OS version.

What macOS updates are you wanting or needing??? What Mac model do you have???

Did you clone the external drive with you old OS system that apparently boots to the new drive, and what did you use to do so???

We need some proper answers in order to answer your questions or to possibly help you with your problem.

If you replaced the drive and are still getting the errors with a known good drive, it could be the cable is broken. May not be visible to you, but all it takes is a micro-fracture of the conductors and the cable will not work.

The new drive will need to be formatted. Start up from the external drive and use Disk Utility (DU) to format the new internal drive.
