The BEST news is that Mac OS 10.15.3 FINALLY squashes the problem that some folks were having where Apple's Mail lost data.

So for those who have been asking "Is it safe to upgrade to Catalina yet?", the answer is finally YES. Assuming that you don't have any 32-bit apps that can't be upgraded to be 64-bit, or replaced with something similar that is 64-bit.

    Catalina
First time since my first Mac (too many years ago to remember)I have hated it.CATALINA screwed up so many times, none are fixed. We have called support so many times, they try to help, but if the top techies cannot figure out my problems.???????

My e-mail folders 'on my mac' disappeared as well as on icloud no folders I have saved, some as far back as the 90s.Cannot recover from back up because everytime I try to get into E-Mail from time machine,it immediately closes.

My photos are a complete disaster,I have doubles and triples of most all of my photos. Tried using the program mac support suggested, NOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Still wont work.I am just so frustrated ,can I go back to previous browser?

No I did not save a copy.

I cannot afford to buy new computer.
This is a 2017. I wish I had never updated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The email issues were solved with 10.15.3, supposedly. I don't know for sure because I never had any email issues with Catalina before 10.15.3, so I can't verify that statement personally. Just read it somewhere here.

The Time Machine/Mail issue has been around since, I think, at least Mojave, maybe earlier. The only workaround I can think of is to use TM to restore the entire mail folder(s) to the previous, not trying it from inside Mail. If you do a bit of searching you can find the paths to where the various files are stored, usually in your Library folder. Your old folders MIGHT be there, or the may not. You'd have to do some digging to see. (But make a backup of what you have now, as digging around might also screw it all up even worse.)

Can you explain the photos issue a bit more? Are you talking about within Photos, the application, or duplicated files on your system? I used a program I found in the Mac App store called Dupe File Finder to clean up one drive I had where I threw all my image files as a temp storage, then let the software find all the duplicates for me to delete to clean up the mess. Seemed to work well for me.

One should always have a backup before allowing any system update. Always. Every time. Always.

    But you've learned that, right?

    Much more information here:

Michael Tsai - Blog - Mail Data Loss in macOS 10.15

    And here

    Michael Tsai - Blog - macOS 10.15.3

    it says:

"...from what I’ve heard macOS 10.15.3 fixes the bug where large numbers of messages stored “On My Mac” could be deleted when updating to Catalina or rebuilding Mail’s database. It does not fix the bugs where moving messages between mailboxes (via drag and drop, rules, or AppleScript) can delete them, duplicate them, or simply not move them at all."

If the tech support/AppleCare folks ultimately tell you that they can't find/fix the problem, contact Apple's "Customer Relations":

You can reach Apple Customer Relations by calling: 1-800-275-2273 and asking for "Customer Relations."

Apple Customer Relations is staffed with people who have less stringent guidelines than Tech Support, and who are empowered to decide if a situation warrants their intervention, and they have the authority to do what is necessary to make you happy if you have a reasonable complaint.

Be sure to give them the links that I gave in my previous post. That way they can't tell you that there is no such defect in the Mac OS.

Yes, you are correct,I have gotten complacent because I had never had an issue before. Even the techs said they had never heard of the e-mail problem,I think we went through 8 sr.advisors.

My photo issues is in Photos, yes. My iphone is fine. The tech said to use Duplicate photo fixer,it does not work. Everytime I plug in my iphone, instead of having say 6 pictures to download, I have over 1000.
I do use icloud to back up pictures, but deleting the dupes from there does nothing.

I know I dont describe an issue well, but I write as I type, just prattling on.If I could fix these 2 major things I would be happy.

Just to be clear, when the 1000 download, you end up with duplicates in the database? I say that because when I upgraded, I also saw that it was going to download a heap of images, but I let it run and in the end it didn't actually add them to the database because it detected they were all duplicates of files Photos already had. So, as I asked, did you actually end up with duplicates in Photos?

The product I listed in Post #5 is supposed to de-dupe Photos as well, but I didn't use that function because I don't have dupes in Photos.

I actually have 3 photo dupe removers, none of them work, in fact each time it seems to add them. So would it work to dedupe on an ap from my iphone or just keep trying from my photos library?

Yes,I ended up with duplicates in the data base.

I can't answer the question because I've never had to de-dupe Photos. I don't think working on the iPhone will do much, and is likely to take longer. How do you import images, by actually copying in the file or by just referencing it? Have you changed that method recently? I'm wondering if the duplicate is somehow associated with that.

You mentioned Time Machine earlier. Can you restore the database from before the duplicates appearing? Would you lose pictures if you did that? IF you would lose some, can you export them from Photos BEFORE you do the restore? Another approach could be to rename the database, do a restore from TM and then open Photos, which should open the restored database.

What de-dupe removers are you using? This is one of those software categories that tend to attract low-skilled developers looking to make a quick buck and wind up causing more problems than they solve. I haven't used any in some time myself, but the only ones you should be using should be doing more than just "visually" comparing photos to see if they look alike or looking at some superficial values. A good one will do checksums to see if they are literally identical. I've used Tidy Up in the past and it is outstanding, but can be overwhelming to understand due to the number of options available.

Please verify and include the exact model/year of your Mac and OS X version number (available from "About This Mac", then "More Info" on the Apple menu).
