Slow Wifi on Catalina for current user
    i have a strange problem.

On my latest Catalina (10.15.2) in my current account I have a low wifi speed, around 15-20 Mbps. When I create a new account and switch to it, the speed grows to 85-95 Mbps. I checked VPN, it is not turned on, I created a new location for Wi-Fi, nothing helps.

How I can fix that problem? Thank you.

Look in Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities), click on the Network tab. See what is using all your bandwidth.

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

Thank you, I looked into the activity monitor - nothing interesting, no active processes with large traffic.

Did you just do a Catalina upgrade or has the slow Wi-Fi problem been in existence for some time???

Have you tried shutting down and restarting your wireless router??

Have any of the settings changed in your wireless router setup???

Hi, pm-r, thanks for your reply.

    > Did you just do a Catalina upgrade or has the slow Wi-Fi problem been in existence for some time???

I have been using Catalina for a very long time. I accidentally noticed a problem, so I'm not sure when it appeared.

    > Have you tried shutting down and restarting your wireless router??

    Sure. And reset router too.

    > Have any of the settings changed in your wireless router setup???

It seems to me that the problem is not in the router. All other devices, iPads and Windows computers show a speed of 85-95Mbps. When I log into another OS account in Catalina, the speed is also 90-95.

Can you try booting up into Safe Boot Mode and see if the speed improves at all.

To use safe boot mode, press and hold the shift key down while booting.

Actually I'm not sure if I a speed check will work while running in safe boot mode as some of the extensions needed may get disabled, anyway, still worth a try. If the speed improves, then there's some third-party software running in your normal user account that is affecting the Wi-Fi speed.

PS: I'm assuming you have checked that you are connecting to the correct Wi-Fi router and not one of your neighbour's unprotected wireless routers.

I don't know if Network Diagnostics will or can show any cause for any slowdown. To access it, hold down option key while you click and access the wireless icon in the menu, assuming you have it there.

I tried to boot in safe mode, no changes in speed. Any ideas?

Also, maybe try changing the channel on the router.

I noticed you mentioned Catalina 10.15.2. Are you doing the beta because the latest public release of Catalina is 10.15.1?

Okay, but it's kind of difficult for us to suggest a resolution to your slow WiFi when you're running a beta. When did this slowdown occur? Were your speeds normal when running 10.15.1?

I do not know when this problem appeared. I did not pay attention to it. It’s clear to me that the problem is not with the router. If the problem was in the router, then on a new account on the same Catalina the same low speed would be, i think?

It does appear your user account is corrupt in some way. It could be anything but probably not software since it's the same in Safe mode. You can always create a new admin account and transfer your data to it but it might be better to do a clean install of Catalina 10.15.1 and forgo running the beta.
