MBP Restarts/Kernel Panics Automatically When It Goes to Sleep
My pristine and babied 2016 15" MacBook Pro has been exhibiting a weird behavior for a while now where it will end up restarting itself and displaying the "Your Mac Restarted Because of a Problem" screen a few second after the screen goes to sleep.

It works very reliably when in "desktop/clampshell mode" and when in normal laptop mode connected to the charger. It also works flawlessly in normal laptop mode with nothing connected at all, as long as I don't let it go to sleep. If I leave it there and let it go to sleep without power or my Thunderbolt Dock plugged in, it will reboot/kernel panic.

It began happening with Mojave still installed (I believe), and I figured it couldn't hurt to upgrade to Catalina which would hopefully fix the issue, but it still happens in Catalina, so I'm not sure what to do now. I've tried all the classic reset SMC or NVRAM, Disk Repair, etc. I did a clean install of Catalina by the way.

The one thing that seems to "fix the issue" is booting in to Safe Mode. It can go to sleep and wake up fine while in Safe Mode, it just acts like normal and wakes right back up.

I'm totally out of ideas...do you have any?

    Thanks!

The one thing that seems to "fix the issue" is booting in to Safe Mode. It can go to sleep and wake up fine while in Safe Mode, it just acts like normal and wakes right back up.
That usually indicates that a driver (kext) or something that is starting up in normal mode is causing the kernel panics. Safe Mode removes all kexts (drivers) that are not Apple required to operate the MacBook Pro. I wonder if your Thunderbolt Dock is causing the problem? Even if you don't have it attached in normal mode, the driver is still running. Safe Mode removes the driver. That would be my guess. Not definitive by all means as it could well be something else.

    Yes, I totally agree.

While that sounds very logical, this same issue happens with a completely clean install of Catalina...and I just tried installing Mojave on an external SSD and booting from that...it boots fine, works fine in the same manner as before, but if its allowed to go to sleep it restarts/kernel panics, just like in my current Catalina install.

    - - - Updated - - -

Just to be super specific as well - when I say clean install, I mean "clean" as in never ever plugged in to anything after that reformat, aside from the charger...and it still happens, unfortunately.

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

That sounds, to me, like there is something not responding to the wake signal. As chscag said, it could be the dock, or any external device that is normally attached but which is not there at the time of the panic. That, from your description, could very well be the Thunderbolt dock. Which dock is it and did it come with software to support the dock that you installed?

Sure. I made sure to unplug the laptop from the dock and all other peripherals, including the power adapter. To be clear, this behavior was occurring with a clean install of Catalina and I think even before on Mojave. I now have apps and other things installed because I have to do my work, but I just want to make that clear.

This behavior only happens when connected to NOTHING. If its connected to the dock or power adapter and goes to sleep, it doesn't crash.

That, from your description, could very well be the Thunderbolt dock. Which dock is it and did it come with software to support the dock that you installed?
Totally agree, although it was happening when I did a full wipe and reinstall of Catalina. It will reboot if allowed to sleep while off power or TB3 Dock.

The dock I have is one I just got a couple weeks ago, so this behavior was happening well before the dock every was a factor.

It's an Akitio Thunderbolt 3 Dock Pro, just for the record though.

    Thanks

When you do a clean install of Catalina, are you erasing the drive, then installing Catalina? The reason I am asking, is because it says you have 32 bit apps installed? Unless EtreCheck just states that, for any scan it does?

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

Yeah, that's what I mean. I saw that and thought it odd as I don't know what I'd have installed after the clean install that would be 32bit...

You can use Go64 to find the 32 bit applications. You might be surprised what it uncovers.

I noticed that you installed "Honey". Did you read all the information that Honey presents to you when you installed it? In case you didn't, I suggest reading thru it very carefully as Honey is a threat to your internet privacy. I too installed it some time ago but after reading what it does I quickly uninstalled it.
