Catalina and new tv and music apps
Not sure if this is the correct forum - please move if not.
Have successfully upgraded to MacOS Catalina with no problems to speak of (fingers crossed)
Now that iTunes has been split into three separate apps I would like to move the iTunes media file location to an ext 4TB external hdd to free up space on my iMac's internal drive. Because of Catalina would I have to format the ext hdd to APFS

The location for the music app and the tv app's iTunes Media file have the same path so I presume that after consolidating both libraries I can just point the apps to the new location on the ext hdd. Am I correct?

    Any advice much appreciated

It's not necessary to format the external drive to APFS, you can leave it as HFS+. Catalina like other versions of macOS can read and write to HFS+. And yes, you should be able to point the new Music and TV app to your external drive for access to their libraries.

BTW, if you have an external drive that is an SSD, then it would be better to format it as APFS since that is more efficient and faster. But for spinning hard drives, it's best to leave them as HFS+.

Many thanks for your reply chscag. I'm afraid I just learned a nasty lesson. I should have left well alone - I lost all my Music, Movies, TV shows, etc. I have just spent the last few hours cloning my internal hdd back with a CCC backup. All seems well again but I'm still checking.
