    Freezing - Tried Everything?
    I've got a freeze problem.

Freezing periodically. Mouse cursor still moves, even though everything else freezes. Youtube sound continues also when all else freezes.

    Have tried the following:

Removed a lot of photos and files. HD now half empty.
    Upgraded to Catalina
    Removed peripherals one by one
Tested all the Apps one by one
    Run Apple Hardware Test
    Used Disk Utility repair disk
    Use a Safe Boot

Actually, I've tried just about everything advised. I can't upgrade memory with this Mac. Any ideas what it might be, or should I try again with the above - maybe I wasn't careful enough?

    Thanks,

One of our members, Randy, created a troubleshooting webpage, OS X Maintenance And Troubleshooting. See if anything there helps?

Is the freezing predictable or deliberately reproducible? If so, you should open Activity Monitor and switch to the CPU tab and sort by highest CPU usage. Then trigger the freeze and see which app is on top. If not reproducible, then keep Activity Monitor running and wen the issues arises, and you can use the machine switch to it and see if it reports anything.

Also, boot into Safe Mode and see if the issue arises. If not, then it's not an OS thing, most likely, but an 3rd party application thing.

The last thing to keep in mind if this has the original HDD is that it might be failing, thus causing the temporary freezes while it repeatedly reads data from the HDD.

HDD = Hard disk drive. Take note that the Disk Utility repair or diagnostics are not complete and do not look at the SMART parameters of the drive.

We recommend using the DriveDX application.

A couple other things to try before spending any cash:

    1. Create a new account...then boot into it...and see if the freezes continue.
    2. Boot the computer from an external drive (fresh OS install)...and see if the freezes continue.

The main thing we want to find out is...do we have a hardware or software/OS issue. If idea #1 solves things...then could be a software/OS issue. If idea #2 solves things...then could be a hardware issue (internal HD/SSD going bad).

If neither idea #1 or #2 solves things...could be a more serious hardware issue.

    p.s. Two questions:

    1. Looks like your iMac is running the latest macOS (Catalina)...is this an official Catalina release...or a pre-release/beta version of Catalina?
    2. Did the freezing exist before Catalina was installed...or after Catalina was installed?
