Sleep/timeout will not wake video after Catalina. Have to reset using power button!
Throwing this out to see if anyone else is having this post Catalina upgrade issue and if there is a known fix for it?

I upgraded to Catalina relatively pain free. Now when the screen times out? I can not wake my (2017) mbp video without holding the power button down and restarting it. When the system comes back up it presents the message "you restarted the system due to a problem, dod you want to load your windows back etc.."

I say video because the keyboard / touch bar all light up and presents the options of whatever app I had open prior to the screen timeout but I have no video???

I have reset the NVRAM and SMC with no luck. I stopped at the Apple store yesterday to show them and they wanted to keep it overnight and send the data up to Apple for further research into this issue. I couldn't leave it on short notice but may take it back or wait for the next update?

    Thanks!
    Pete

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

The issue is not present in safe mode.

That means that your machine actually had a kernel panic when it went to sleep. Check the Console to see if you see any panic logs. if things are working fine in Safe mode, then one of the applications you are running is causing the issue.

To isolate the culprit, boot the machine and ensure that no apps are running and then start up each of your applications you normally have running when the machine goes to sleep. With one application running, put the MBP to sleep and wake it up a few times. If that works, then start he second app, rinse and repeat until you find the problem maker.

Once you find the problem app, ensure that it is updated to the latest version.

I have no applications starting at login so whatever services load with the boot up of the OS is all that are currently starting. The dock shows finder as the single loaded app when I start and login to the system.

I have a Logitech K580 and M20 which services load but they are up to date per the system when I check.

I cannot find anything in the logs that have to do with video or system. I take it kernel panic logs are a reference to all the logs under the console, that is where I'm looking.
    Thanks...

Just because you have nothing starting at login does not mean there are not other things starting at boot. Safe Boot blocks those other things from launching. Have a run with Etrecheck, look for what starts up at boot. You can get it from the Apple store or from the developer: EtreCheck

Thanks for the etrecheck utility suggestion. After loading that it did show the mbp had some panics although it looks like it mistook my model for maybe having the T2 chip? It also kept reporting there were 32bit services so I took it to apple and asked them to run their low level diags and if that came clean to wipe it and install Catalina from their local image off their servers.

I got it back today and all seems good so far. I will restore my programs and files later this evening and should be fine.

Thanks to all for your knowledge with Mac's this is new to me so it will be a while before I come up to speed!
