Better to upgrade to Mojave for now. Keep in mind that installing Mojave will convert your hard drive to APFS. Neither Mojave or Catalina can be installed to a drive that's formatted to HFS+.

Why, and what "features" do you want or need???

Depending on what you have and need, installing Catalina in its current form and the conflicts with some software many seem to be experiencing might be OK if you enjoy being a masochist or martyr.

    Your choice.

if you didn’t previously get Mojave, you can not get it now.

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

Mojave is still available: Go here and follow the link to the App Store.

I don't need any new features. I like high sierra. pages and numbers have updates that I cant install while using high sierra.

I'm more concerned with security and privacy, I like to keep things fairly updated for those reasons.

I use to be the first to install the new OS when it comes out, but not anymore. Id rather wait until the bugs are fixed... let others deal with all the problems.

Correct, that's reason enough to look into upgrading. Unless you have specific reasons, you should always jump to the newest version of macOS. That's where the active development/fixes are being applied. The support for previous versions is limited to critical bugs only.

As with all upgrades, the usual advice on having a backup and checking compatibility holds.

the app store interface is really ugly in mojave. almost a little confusing/complicated. otherwise the update seems to be fine.

I see carbon copy cloner 4.x wont work with Mojave. I have to pay $20 for an upgrade to version 5. lol.
