What O/S can I install on a Apple iMac Core 2 Duo Mid-2007?
Was given an old MAC (a Apple iMac Core 2 Duo Mid-2007) with no OS. According to specs, it only has 1gb RAM, so how current can I install on this unit?

    THANK YOU!

The newest macOS version this model iMac can run is 10.11.x (El Capitan)...if it has at least 2 gig of RAM installed.

If it has no OS installed at all...you need to start by purchasing a macOS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) install DVD...which is still sold at Apple.com. Then you need to purchase mac OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion) also still sold at Apple.com (this is available via download only).

If you have a 2nd computer available to you...I believe that you can skip the macOS 10.6 purchase. In this case what needs to be done is:

    - Purchase & download macOS 10.8 (Mountain Lion) onto the 2nd computer.
    - Create a bootable USB stick installer of Mountain Lion on this 2nd computer (Google for procedure).
    - Take the bootable Mountain Lion USB stick installer & boot this mid-2007 iMac from it.
    - Proceed with the Mountain Lion install.

Once you have the iMac running with macOS 10.8 on it...here's where things get a little tricky. From macOS 10.9 forward...all macOS upgrades were free...and download only. The difficulty is...as soon as a newer OS was released...Apple removed the older macOS version from the Apple servers. Thus if you never downloaded these older macOS versions previously...they will not be available to you via the Apple Store.

If this is the case...the only way I know of to obtain macOS versions newer than macOS 10.8 (Mountain Lion)...is via sellers on eBay.

If you have any other questions...please post.

And for all details about that iMac, just select the specific model from this list:
Apple iMac Specs (All iMac Tech Specs): EveryMac.com

Lots of other upgrade info available at the site as well and some various resources.

PS: Click the * on some of the headings to display extra details and info.
