I wonder if anyone published a "Tips & Tricks" summary for the Mac - not a big book, basically just one liners of time saving features that are not obvious.
You might be interested in having a look at MacPilot.app, that not only lists a lot of the little OS tips and tricks, but even enables a lot of them or disables or modifies some that you may not like:

Koingo Software, Inc. | MacPilot 10: Unlock 1200 features in Mac OS X

Command plus Shift plus W is yet another way of closing all open windows or Tabs in Safari.
For those with a mouse with a spare button, I used this command for the 8th " hidden button" on my Logitech m705 mouse using the LCC pref pane and creation a "custom" click. So now, just a single mouse button click, and the selected window disappears. Nice and simple and quick.

Other mice may have similar options available.

Take note that MacPilot is not free. Recommend you download and use TinkerTool instead which does the same thing and is still freeware.

I was looking for the same function that Ian described with Safari, ie just close the open windows on Firefox, not close the application.
I came across this on the net
How to close multiple firefox windows (not mulitple tabs) | Firefox Support Forum | Mozilla Support
but I assume that only applies to Windows.
I can't even find an "Exit" option on any of the Mac Firefox drop downs and I'm not sure what they mean by Firefox menu.

Thanks Charlie, I was having a brain fart trying to recall the TinkerTool name for some reason.
