    External SSD dri
As I have a number of 32 bit apps that apparently won't be supported under Catalina I will have to use an external SSD drive for the new OS. Will an SSD powered by the USB port be enough or will I have to get one that's mains powered?
If it's the latter does anyone have a recommendation as to a reliable drive?
    Thanks

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

Will an SSD powered by the USB port be enough

If it helps I recently changed my ext HDD for Carbon Copy Cloner back ups to an SSD powered by USB port and booting from that drive for test purposes didn't seem any slower than booting from my Fusion internal drive.
Peter - I used to be paranoid but now I just worry all the time

It doesn't matter, there is no difference between a drive designed to work on USB power or one that requires additional mains power. Likely spinning drives will go down the mains power route while SSDs tend not to.

If you do notice a speed difference, you can always get a powered USB hub and use that to bridge between external SSD and Mac Mini.

If your Mac Mini is a new model (2018) it will have Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports. An external SSD such as the Samsung model T5 which connects to USB-C will be very fast. Otherwise, any external SSD will only be as fast as its connection. Which means your data flows back and forth at the speed of the USB bus.
