Let us know how it turns out. I agree with Jake about the SSD, but at least now you know how to swap the SSD out if it should fail and the cost.

    Fingers crossed

Hmmmm...??? I really don't see how that could happen unless you already had Mohave installed onto the backup drive along with your backup data.

Anyway, as long as you have your data intact you'll be okay.

    Success!

It seems to have installed Mojave and copied my data from the backup in one go

    *now a happy bunny*

Now if everything is all working and intact as you like, now would be as good time as ever to set up a backup schedule.

That's assuming that you want or need to keep any of your data of course.

Phew, let’s hope all is well now.
Re backups, I use Carbon Copy Cloner, yes it’s around $40.00 depending on where you are but it’s more than paid for itself over the years. Set to run twice a week onto an external HDD, formatted APFS it’s great for migrating data in the case of a “clean instal” or restoring damaged files as well as actually running my laptop in the case of an internal drive failure.
Fully functional 30 day free trial and good support, I can’t find anything better.
I used to be conceited but now I'm perfect.

    Backup successful using SuperDuper!

I have used this for many years and always been reliable.

I've tried both SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner over the years and both worked well. I finally settled on Carbon Copy Cloner. IIRC I liked the SuperDuper interface a tad better but it dod not copy the recovery partition when you clone a drive.

I've used CCC in conjunction with Time Machine for the last couple of years. Haven't used SD in a while.

Both apps do what is needed, but like Sly I like CCC. Mike Bombich who is the developer is always ready to respond to a question and his site offers excellent information about hard drives. CCC has saved me from disasters more than once.

Fyi: the 2015 and 2017 Air will work with a nvme drive if you use the correct adapter.

I'm running an HP ex900 in an early 2015 on Mojave with no issues other than slightly higher battery drain during use.

I was just reading about those drives and the differences, mainly to just learn more, and man, there are sure some nice FAST drives available out there, assuming everything is compatible:

Why is NVMe better than SATA and mSATA
Why is NVMe better than SATA and mSATA - Appuals.com

And not that huge of an expense for those who want or need FAST drive access SPEED really. Just a relative extra cost.

Super fast nvme drives will have their speed limited in an 2015 and 2017 Air since they have a pci-e 2.0 x 4 bus while the 15" 2015 has a pci-e 3.0 x 4 bus; therefore, the read and write speeds of an nvme drive should be very close to or slightly faster than an Apple SSD while being a relatively inexpensive upgrade.

Thanks for the extra info and details and I'm sure those with such machines would be glad to know that.

Unfortunately, my mid-2011 2.7 27" iMac probably can't even use one. But at least it sould be able to support and use a SATA SSD if and when the iMac ever needs to be dismantled, a fairly excessive PITA type job thanks to the Apple designers.
