Is there a way to text from MacBook Pro to a smart phone, using their phone number?
Often someone will want something from my computer, web site, info, etc that's just too hard to transfer to my IPhone so I'd like to text them direct from the computer

Yes. On your Mac, go to Finder > Applications > Messages and click on that.
That will open the application on your Dock.
For this to work, you will have to have Messages synced via the iCloud to/from your iPhone and to/from your Mac. (On your iPhone >Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and then select your iPhone number and your iCloud account). (On your Mac - Messages > Preferences > Accounts and again check/tick your iPhone number and your iCloud account).
The messages get to/from your Mac via your iPhone so the latter should be reasonably close by.
Caveat: your Mac's OS is several versions behind the current one and I don't know which iPhone you have or how up to date the iPhone's iOS is.
Lastly, if someone wants "something from my computer, web site, info, etc that's just too hard to transfer to my IPhone", why not send it by email?
Just some thoughts.
Any difficulties, please post back. Only too happy to help>
