    Desktop icons but programs not installed
    I have a Mac Mini and a Macbook Air.

    Just noticed that desktop icons, for applications installed on the Mini have appeared on the desktop of the Air (same Apple account on both machines).

    Is there a way to stop this happening and can I safely delete the unwanted icons from the Air?

    Thanks

    You didn’t specify what macOS version you are using on either Mac, but you probably have enabled “download apps purchased on other Macs”, or something to that affect. I believe it is in System Preferences > App Store, or it may be Software Update.

    Thanks for the reply

    Both are running Mojave. I hadn't checked that any of the copied icons actually worked... So is it possible, then, that the actual programs are ins?

    Yes, if you purchased the apps through the App Store, and you have “download apps purchased on other Macs” enabled.

    Ok, that explains some of them thanks but there are also icons for my parallels virtual machines plus documents and photos I'd put on my Mini desktop

    Parallels also puts Windows apps on the Mac, if you allow it. Parallels, click on the gear symbol in the Desktop, then click on Options and Applications and un-check the "Share Windows applications with this Mac" option.

    @tomg35,

    This is what member ferrarr (Bob) was referring to:

    Open App Store > Preferences > and you will see this:

    Also, you may have activated this feature in System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive,

    You may have selected "Desktop & Documents Folders". This would sync the items in those locations. If the apps don't work, but are only aliases/shortcuts, then this is most likely the issue.
