    OS upgrade on 2009 iMac
What are all the steps to upgrade from Snow Leopard?
What is the highest compatible OS with my iMac 10,1?
Do I need more memory - more than 4GB?

If you look in the Mac App Store app, you may be able to get High Sierra, but you may need another version of OS X first.

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

    Welcome to our Forums.

First off, I’d have to suggest that 4GB of memory is pushing things to the limit if you are contemplating upgrading by four or five operating systems.

Assuming you have the final version of Snow Leopard, you can probably upgrade to El Capitan. Beyond that I’m not sure.

Have a look at Bob’s link. I would say that the question is not how far you can go with an upgrade, but how well your Mac can perform with 4GB of memory.

In addition to the fine advice you've already received, be sure to check to see if your apps are going to work with any newer version of macOS that you choose to upgrade to.

You can check the status of your apps by going to the "RoaringApps Site" and checking application compatibility.
