On El Capitan - Can I split a partition in two?
I have a large 8 TB external hooked up to my Mini.

When I initially formatted it, I made a few 1 and 2 TB partitions to use as backups.

Three of these partitions have a fair amount of data on them; there are still a few of these 1 TB partitions that have no data, just the formatting.

If possible, I would now like to split one of these "empty" 1 TB partitions into two 500 GB partitions.

I keep reading that this is possible without affecting the other partitions - especially the ones with data, but when I go to Disk Utility there doesn't seem to be an option to create two 500 GB partitions from one 1 TB partition.

    So...can that actually be done?
Can I do it with Disk Utility?
And where do I start? When I select the partition I want to split into two, the partition icon is greyed out.

I believe this article explains how to do it, https://www.macworld.com/article/298...-facelift.html.

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

In answer to your questions: If the partitions were formatted as a GUID partition map yes and if not no.

I used to be conceited but now I'm perfect.

    Thanks,
Yes, the partitions are formatted as GUID, at least it says so when I select the whole external (and GUID is what I selected when I did the original partitioning)
But if I select just one of the partitions and check Info it says file system OS X Extended and the File system UUID with a hex number next to it

I read the MacWorld article - I get to the part where it says:
In the new Disk Utility, you drag a handle around a circle and click the + button to add new partitions.
    OK - sounds good.
Then in the article it shows the circle where one can change the size or add new partitions, but how do I get to that circle?
I must have clicked on every option I see in disk utility, none give me that window that is shown in the article.

PS: I feel really stupid posting this - I'm sure I have seen the circle before when I was poking around on my Mac, but now can't get to it for love nor money.

If you look in the image, it shows the "disk/drive" as being selected, not the partition you want to adjust. After you're there, you should be able to select the disk partition you want to partition.
