Tiff Files won't open in any app
    Hello,
For some reason all of my Tiff files and PDF files will not open in any program on my Mac.

My files are on the cloud and are automatically backing up from my Mac. When I click the file to open it via Photoshop or even preview it doesn't do anything.
If I go into Photoshop and go to Open file, all the files that are Tiff or PSD are greyed out and I can't open them.

I just updated my operating system and everything is up to date.

Does anyone else have this issue? Does anyone know what's going on and how I can open my files again?

    Thank you.

Akansal69, I am having that exact same problem. It's not because the Tif file is corrupt. All of my tiff files on my computer are not able to open... All the files can't be corrupt. I'm going crazy trying to figure this out.

Go into APPLICATIONS and open Preview.

Drag your tiff files into Preview.

Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

When I do, nothing happens. I can go into preview and try to open the file and it doesn't open.

I know that you posted to the end of a similar Thread stating, quite reasonably, that you are convinced your TIFF files are not corrupted.

But when I read what is quoted above - ie that basically no application will open these files, it does tend to suggest something wrong with them.

You state that all these files are backed up to the cloud - I presume you mean iCloud?? - if you sign into iCloud (or wherever) and look at these files, can you open them there?

Oh; one other thing. Silly to suggest it, really, but have you tried the first line of attack in these situations - rebooted your Mac?

What happens if you create a new tiff file or have someone send you a tiff file? Does it open correctly? Also I’m not sure if the correct extension is tif or tiff.

Can a Mod merge these last couple of posts to her other thread about the same issue? Otherwise, we're going to be going around in circles.

    Yes that would be good.
In the meantime Akansal69, i suggest you download a new and different TIFF file from a different (and reliable) source and see if it can be opened. If it can then it's possible that all of the unopenable files are indeed corrupted as Preview suggests.
I used to be conceited but now I'm perfect.

    @Adele:

Please do not cross post. You cross posted to a very old thread from 2015. Everything has been combined here.

Also I’m not sure if the correct extension is tif or tiff.
Just checked and confirmed. They are usually referred to as TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) images, but may be saved as .tiff or .tif - on my Mac anyway, they are saved as .tiff

Either extension is universally accepted and used and valid and usually work.

At least when they aren't corrupt!!!!

Where did the files come from? Did you create them? Were they created on a different PC? Were they created in winOS or macOS? What program created them?

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

Try moving the goofy .tif etc files into a new folder at the root level of the drive.

Then make a new username account user in your Users & Groups Pref Pane then logout of your current account and login to the new account and try opening any of the goofy files. Do they open and work when logged in as the new user???

I think I am getting closer to figuring this out. I believe it's an Icloud issue.

Last year my computer automatically started backing up to Icloud (and I was like great, everything will be backed up). However, what it did was deleted all the larger files from my actual computer (hence why I can't open any Tiff or PSD file) and then left a placeholder on the computer. That is why when I try to open the files via Photoshop they are greyed out and unable to open.
Now I am having issues with getting those files off the cloud and on to my computer where I can actually work on them.
    I've tried 2 things:
    1. make sure I am logged on to my icloud via system preferences (all good there)
    2. extended the Cache settings to receive unlimited cache size.

Still nothing is working. The files are unable to download to my computer and I don't know how to access them.
I'm going to call Apple and maybe someone can walk me through this.
Thank you all so much for chiming in here and trying to help me figure this out!

Sorry about that.. I'm new here. Note taken.
