    Unwanted webpages popping up
When using Safari on my iMac I keep getting these
webpages appearing in a new tab. Is the Apple one genuine or malware? (I don't have any paid-for Apple Care Protection) Tried to paste a screenshot but couldn't so here is the text.
'Your system is infected with 3 viruses, traces of 2 malware and 1 phishing/spyware. System damage 28.1% - immediate removal required blah blah blah' There is a 'Scan Now' button to click on. The website address is 'security-check.apple.com.izhnkat.6rpvbflboe0tqkbojigh8g.icu

The other one is from Mackeeper 'Clean up your Mac after surfing the web blah blah blah Download Now etc. Why are they appearing all of sudden. I clear history and cookies regularly. Any help would be appreciated thank you.

I strongly suggest you ignore both of those pop ups. MacKeeper isn't really mawlare in the true sense of the word but it can be a giant pain to get rid of once it's installed. It sounds like this is a browser-related issue though. Here's what I'd try in place of MacKeeper:

    1. Clear browser cache See Here.
2, If the problem persists, download, install, and run Malware Bytes for Mac. No need for the paid version. the free one should get the job done.

Slydude. I have cleared the Safari Cache (Thanks for the instructions link, I would not have known how to do that!). I've also downloaded the free Malwarebytes and the scan removed 6 suspect items. I've now restarted the iMac and will see how it goes. Really appreciate the help that you and others have given me. It is very humbling to discover people like yourselves willing to share their knowledge and experience and give their time to help others. Many thanks.

Hi Slydude. I've started a new thread for an unrelated problem but it occurred to me that you might be able to help. I've just bought a new iPhone SE 128gb for my wife. She's been using a Nokia 6300 and never had a smart phone before! Therefore she hasn't got an Apple ID. I'm just setting up the phone for her and the first problem is when I enter her iCloud email address a message appears ' Your Apple ID could not be created because xxxxxxxx@icloud.com is no longer available. Please choose a new one'. I then realised that she doesn't have an email account but i have her email address as an alias on my account so that her emails can be received on my devices (she's not into tech). So I've removed the alias on my email account but I still get the message, so can't set-up an Apple ID for her using her current email address. Any ideas? Thank you.

Just reporting back. All sorted!!! It's now been 7 days since clearing the Safari cache and running malwarebytes and there've been no pop-ups so very pleased with the outcome. Thanks to all.

Glad that sorted things out for you. Hopefully you're done with that for a while.
