Share USB EL Capitan Fax with Power Mac G5
    On my network I have a Max G5 OS X 10.4.11

I want to send faxes from the G5 through the USB Fax on the El Capitan iMac.

I have printer sharing turned on:

"Printer Sharing allows others on your network to use printers and fax modems connected to this computer."

However, on the G5 I can not get the USB Fax to show when I try to print from that Mac.

I am using Share Screen on the iMac to connect to the G5.

Comments on how to make this work?

    Thanks

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you want, but...
Sharing a fax would be via printer sharing in System Prefs on the iMac, and then setup on the G5 using Printer Setup.

I tried that and it did not work. No option to add Fax on the G5 in Print Setup.

I am using screen sharing on the iMac to access G5.

    Comments?

Give me a day to fire up the old G4 and see what it takes. By the way, what OS version on the G5? I wonder if it doesn't have software faxing capability?

I am using Mac OS X 10.4.11, and accessing the G5 via Screen Sharing from the iMac.

The screen sharing iMac has the USB modem support for Fax using El Capitan and the USB attached modem.

For whatever reason, Apple has discontinued this valuable feature on Sierra, and High Sierra.

I needed to fax some documents from the G5 and did not want to physical transfer them so I was hoping I could just print share the Fax on the G5.

    Thanks

Take a look at the instructions here for 10.4.x
    https://ceat-its.okstate.edu/how-man...inter-mac-os-x
(getting to these advanced print protocols will give you many more options.)

I took a look at the site. I see no way to use the uri to reference the USB modem on the iMac.

    Thanks for responding

    Here's one of several methods:
On the iMac, open Safari and go to localhost:631 (this is the cups printing system on that Mac). If it gives you an error that cups web interface is disabled, you'll have to open the Terminal and type the command:
    sudo cupsctl WebInterface=yes
It asks for a password - you use your admin password, and type it "blind" - it doesn't let you see it for security.
Now try Safari - localhost:631 - again. Click on the Printers Tab.
The far left column has queue names - write down the one for your fax.
Now go to System prefs Network and find and write down the iMac's IP address it looks like 192.168.1.25 (four numbers/three dots)
Got to the G5's Printer Setup and hold option and click ADD.
Click on IP printer at the top. For protocol, click Internet Printing Protocol - IPP
Enter the IP address of the iMac that you wrote down. Then enter the queue name you wrote down.
give it a name that's easy - Fax on iMac (?)
check that Print Using says Generic Postscript,
click Add, then try it out.

    Thanks for your expert advise.

I have used Cups before trying to create a fax and fax printer for Mac Sierrra,

I was able to get a working fax printer in Sierra but it did not include the ability to receive faxes.

Thanks I will give it a try.

I want to send faxes from the G5 through the USB Fax on the El Capitan iMac.
What are you using for a "USB Fax on the El Capitan iMac???

Or,why not just pickup an old working US Robotics FAX.modem and maybe a copy of Global Village Fax software if it stll runs in OS X 10.4. I can't remember, but way better than any FAX effort Apple has ever come up with.

    EDIT:
PS:??? would a wireless printer with FAX capabilities not be an easier solution in the end??? And then just share it if even that was needed.

Just using a cheap USB Modem, EBAY around $12.

    It works perfectly.

    USB Modem:

    Product ID: 0x1329
Vendor ID: 0x0572 (Conexant Systems, Inc.)
    Version: 1.00
    Serial Number: 24680246
    Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: Conexant
    Location ID: 0x14410000 / 6
    Current Available (mA): 1000
    Current Required (mA): 100
    Extra Operating Current (mA): 0

Already own too many printers and really do not want to buy another one just for faxing.

    At some probably will.

    Thanks for responding.

I will check out Global Village Fax.

Another "new & improved feature" perhaps???

    But as this article states:
But you can still fax from a Mac—just not through a USB modem.

That could make the setup even more difficult to get your FAXing things configured and setup and actually working.
