Tiger 10.4 With Huge Sparse Disk Image
Hi - I have an eMac running Tiger 10.4.11 with a 150GB Hard Drive Using File Vault -

    Machine Name: eMac
    Machine Model: PowerMac6,4
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.5)
    CPU Speed: 1.42 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.2f1

The HD has been full for some time and I frequently delete files and allow the machine to clear space when shutting down.

I ran Disk Inventory and the sparse disk image is huge (123GB).

Actual files using space on the HD -

    MUSIC 80.51 GB
    LIBRARY 3.92 GB
    OTHERS 2.2 GB
    Total 90.3 GB

Since the sparse disc image is showing as being 123GB and the actual files are 90GB on a 150GB HD, I'm guessing that some of that 123GB is virtual or something ?

I read something about compacting the sparse disk image but it involves using the terminal and I'm fairly paranoid about doing something irreversible.

Would doing this free up space for the hard drive without causing some kind of problem later ?

    Any and all suggestions welcome.

G'day and welcome to nthe forums.

Your eMac needs a good clean out. I see Symantec AV for PowerPC for starters. so it will be slow as antivirus software is a real resource hog.

Also having File Vault enabled causes its own problems. Great of you are a former KGB assassin or such, but for an ordinary user no advantage and as Tiger has not been supported with Security Updates for I guess ten years now it is dangerous to even consider taking on the 'net. If you have the Tiger CD, suggest you boot from it, erase and format the hard driv and do a nice clean install. Of course for that I assume you bdo have a backup on an external drive and it is up to date? Keep us posted for many further help.
Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
