I will shortly be selling my 2010 iMac having upgraded to a 2014 one. I have a 1TB external hard drive for Carbon Copy Cloner. I back my files up to a Time Capsule and do a clone on CCC whenever there is an OS X update.

If I clone now followed by an erase and install from CCC will I just have the OS X or will there be other stuff as well?

Why do you want to "install from CCC"? Why not erase the drive, then re-install whichever Mac OSX/Mac OS/macOS version you will be selling your iMac with?

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

    Hi Alwyn

Here's an Apple Link covering everything you need to do before selling. Forget CCC or Time Machine (TM). It reminds about all the things you have to de-authourise, sign out of etc.

Thanks Ian, most helpful as far as the iMac I'm selling is concerned except that I want to sell it with Sierra already loaded. The instructions in Apple say

"Choose Reinstall macOS (or Reinstall OS X) from the utilities window, then follow the onscreen instructions. This installs the system that came with your Mac when it was new. It isn't associated with your Apple ID, so the new owner can use the App Store to upgrade to a later version using their Apple ID."

The 2014 iMac I have bought came with Sierra installed so the seller must have had a means of installing it. In my case the original was Snow Leopard.

As I made the mistake of trying to download my Time Capsule backup to the new iMac from my Time Capsule I will also need to do an erase and install with that.

    Yes, you are correct, Alwyn.

Apple's view seems to be that by restoring to the OS with which the Mac shipped, (a) the new owner gets a machine that, effectively, looks like it came out of the box and (b) they can upgrade to whatever OS they want - subject to either having purchased it or having an bootable Installer USB with that OS - or go straight to macOS Sierra. Choice, basically.

Thanks. I've looked on eBay to see what sellers of 2010 iMacs are saying about the OS X. Most don't say but some show pix of El Capitan on screens, so far none with Sierra.

    Migrated data from Time Machine
I decided to try restoring from my Time Machine. To my great surprise everything including Virtual Box loaded with Windows XP included and working was there. If I delete Virtual Box will it remove Windows or do I have to uninstall it and, if so, how do I do that?

I need a bit of help in understanding things, Alwyn. I may simply be confused

Are we talking about the same 2010 iMac which you wanted to sell? For which you planned to de-authorise your accounts, Erase the HDD and follow Apple's advice on reinstalling the original OS so that there would be no Apple ID associated with it?

If you are; I don't quite follow why you used TM. You will probably have created an account on the iMac. Moreover, "everything including....Windows XP loaded and was working"; but the new owner can't use any of the loaded stuff including XP because it is licensed to you.

And if by using TM you created an account in your name, any new owner is going to have a major problem. They don't own any of the apps and other items which you migrated. When the owner creates their own Apple ID, this will complicate matters and none of the migrated stuff will work.

Or, have I completely misread your post and you are talking about migrating from TM to a new Mac for your personal use?

Your confusion is understandable Ian. Having screwed up the original set up on the 'new' 2014 iMac I used the Migration Assistant to download from my separate Time Machine which had the most up to date backup. I now have XP in Virtual Box and want to delete it from the newer iMac to release more space on my Hard Drive, which I note has a bit less fee space than the old one!.

Once I am happy that the newer iMac is working satisfactorily I will do an Erase/Install on the old one and put it up for sale.

On another tack, I was also born in Scotland and am deeply unhappy at the possibility that Nicola might succeed in breaking up the Union.

    Colin.

    Hi Colin

Thank you for the clarification. All clear now.

I totally agree with your final statement. We tend to call the lady "Mary Doll" based, as you know, on R C Nesbitt's wife - there's a resemblance there, don't you think?

Ahh well guys look at it this way.

I was raised by Lancashire Grandmother. Her views were so far to the right she believed Hadrian was the last good politician. Why? He built a wall to keep you mob out. It didn't work but Nicola may. (in jest).

She always installed in me .. never trust a man in a skirt!
Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
