Maybe someone can explain to me just WHAT MacKeeper is actually supposed to DO.
Few things in life will clear out the cobwebs more effectively than fighting an 80 MPH wind on two wheels.

It purports to do many things. The best answer to this is to check out the comprehensive review that was done by our Administrator Vansmith. Click on the "Articles" menu item above in the wide red bar. Then look to the right for categories and select "reviews".

Mackeeper is supposedly a utility to clean your mac computer. It is anything but that. If you search the forum you will see many posts about problems with it. Here is an excellent article on it:

The Safe Mac Ongoing MacKeeper fraud

The article contains a link to an excellent utility called AdwareMedic that will get rid of Mackeeper and any other lurking adware.

After doing that I would recommend adding Adblock plus and Ghostry to your web browser as extensions to block further problems.

Also if you want a utility to clean up your mac the only one consistently recommended on this forum is Onyx.

    Titanium Software - Home

Download the version that matches your version of OS X and run everything under the automatic tab.

Everything I have recommended is free and only asks for donations if you wish to do so. Hope this helps.

It, by and large, does what it purports to claim (albeit with some inconsistent results). What is better is a collection of other tools such as OnyX and AppCleaner (to name a few) which are free and of better quality.
