I don't believe Apple is taking new MobileMe subscriptions at the moment until they launch the new Cloud service. I tried to check their site but the search functions seems a bit wonky right now.

Slydude is correct. There are no new .me addresses... free - paid - or otherwise. At this time, I don't think anyone is even sure if there will be .me addresses offered with iCloud either.

For those of us that do have .mac and .me addresses, am not even sure if those are to be abandoned next June or not at this point.

I think he means can someone with an existing .me account and spare e-mail addresses create an e-mail address for him. This is still possible if the account still has spare address slots available.

What he doesn't get is that doing so would still give the owner of the master account control over his personal info, the ability to read his e-mail and the ability to disable the account at any time.

I didn't even think of that. The possible consequences aren't worth the benefit IMO. The Cloud is expected to be live soon (possibly weeks). just wait till then to create an account.

Does anyone know if they're going to make new .me addresses available with iCloud?
Or just leave the rest of us grandfathered?

Yes, all email addresses with iCloud will be @me.com addresses.

I have had a .mac account for years - then a .me (mobile me) account - getting messages and using both addresses for quite some time. Now, I am thinking I should 'pare down' to only using one of them. Which one?
