Problems with browser upgrade

Can anyone help me. I have an IBook G4, about 4 years old, running OSX 10.3.9. The Safari browser was really slow, so I downloaded a newer version (not too new!) - however, since I did that, my mac won't launch any browser at all, although I have tried reinstalling the old Safari version, and a version of Firefox. Any ideas? Thanks.

You may have downloaded a version that is incompatible with Panther. Safari 1.3.2 is the last usable version. Download in link below, or search Google if that link is busted.
Download Apple Safari Updater for Panther 1.3.2 - Apple Safari Updater for Panther - Safari imporvements and fixes - Softpedia
The last version of Firefox that runs on Panther is 2.x.
Mozilla Firefox 2
It's entirely possible that trying to install the wrong version of Safari has ruined your OS in some way, though I think that's highly unlikely. If the versions linked above fail to work, you may be facing a reinstall of OS X.
Please verify and include the exact model/year of your Mac and OS X version number (available from "About This Mac", then "More Info" on the Apple menu).
