MP4 Video to DVD-R - Options in Catalina - Free or Paid?
Hello All - Susan & I purchase a lot of offerings from the Great Courses usually in DVD format - but yesterday I decided to buy a course to view online (12 lectures shown in the pic in MP4 movie format) - now I can view these talks on Quick Time and/or on my iPad w/ their app - and can easily AirPlay to my HDTV in the den using my Apple TV, so not an issue in watching these programs on my TV.

BUT, I was interested in burning the files to a DVD-R on my external Apple SuperDrive to 2 DVD-Rs - so, the question is what is the best and least expensive way(s) to get these MP4 files to a disc that will play in my DVD/BD player? Does Catalina offer an easy 'burning' option? If not, what apps are available (free or paid) to easily do this transfer? This will be an infrequent need for me, and do not want to invest an exorbitant amount in purchasing an application rarely used. I'm assuming that others are in the same mind set. Comments, suggestions, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks as always. Dave

I used to use Toast for this kind f task but to be honest I've not been impressed with the last few versions and haven't bought the current version.

If you just need a basic DVD and aren't interested in fancy menus similar to commercial DVDs give Burn a try. It should get the job done if ll you want is a workable DVD without all the fancy stuff. There are other options in the App Store (including a version of Toast) for $20.00 or less. Search for disc burning. I've used Burn but haven't used the others.

+1 as to recommending the free Burn.app that should work to burn those 12 MP4s, which BTW should fit on a single 8.5 GB for a dual-layered, single-sided disc.

But did you check or look at the terms and conditions of any copyright regarding copying?

Just thought I would mention it... it usually is okay as long as it's just for personal use

    EDIT:
Just in case burn does not work in Catalina, here is a list of alternatives:
But macupdate.com reviews says it does!!

Thanks Sly & Patrick - I'll take a close look at the links - just don't want to spend a lot because will likely be a rarity for me to use - should be no DRM issue w/ those files since will be for my use (of course, if the burned DVR-R works I could give away to 'friends' BUT not my philosphy). Again, these files are also downloaded to my iPad Pro (got 256 GB storage) and AirPlay fine to my HDTV (we watched 4 episodes tonight) - JUST want a way to transfer MP4 files to a DVD-R that works easily? As to one of Patrick's questions, I have about 50 single-layer blank DVD-Rs, so 2 discs would satisfy, plus have not checked if my 6+ y/o Apple Super Drive can do dual layer DVD burning (use to do that years ago on a Sony stand alone DVD burner when I copied hundreds of TCM films from my DVR). Thanks again guys. Dave

By all means use what you have on hand, and no sense buying a whole stack of DL discs if you only need one, and I would be very surprised if your Apple superdrive did not do dual layer read and write. I believe that was originated around the 2004 era and no reason for later drives not to include the feature.

Hi again Patrick - actually, the answer is in 'System Information', as shown below - DL DVD writing is supported by the SuperDrive (purchased mine at the same time as my MBPro, i.e. 2013) - at that time, bought a new Canon IJ printer that could put labels onto 'writable' optical discs, so bought a cylinder but only single-layered - believe I gave my remaining DVD-DLs ones to Goodwill? Just was tired of having paper paste-ons start to come off the discs in my DVD/BD players. Dave
