Which Search Engine? Google - DuckDuckGo - Startpage or ???
I see discussions about various types of search engines sprinkled throughout other threads - perhaps we can consolidate that current discussion here.

There was a short thread a few years ago about three search engines - Google, DuckDuckGo and Startpagehttps://www.mac-forums.com/forums/security-awareness/340522-startpage-vs-duckduckgo-prefer.html?highlight=StartPage

I never heard of Startpage before, it doesn't seem to have caught on.

I have used mainly DuckDuckGo for the last several weeks, but every time I also try Google with the same search terms, I find Google provides a lot more relevant hits.

As a side note - there is tons of information acessible on the net thatneither google or DuckDuchGo will not find - and I'm not talking about the "dark net"

For special searches I try to use one of the specialized search engines in this list:

Okay, I will say that I did know there were search engines out there other than Google, Bing, DuckDuck Go and Yahoo especially when it came to specialised fields like CC Search for copyrights and WiKi Search and StartPage which incorporates Google Search results without the tracking and has a URL generator and SwissCows a semantic search engine but that list has search engines I have never heard of.
Clearly there are still a lot of things I don't know.

I’ve long used StartPage and it generally does a good job. I’ve more recently started using DuckDuckGo and it has gotten pretty good. Last I had tried it a few years ago, it wasn’t so good. The main reason I switched was due to being able to set it as my default search engine in Safari and StartPage isn’t an option. The changes to Safari recently also broke the SP extension that let me make them the default in macOS.

That said, I still occasionally have to use Google. As much as their obsession with data collection bothers me, there are upsides to it.

Please verify and include the exact model/year of your Mac and OS X version number (available from "About This Mac", then "More Info" on the Apple menu).

That's just doesn't seem to be a "one size fits all" browser or search engine out there yet. I have always had at least 3 browsers and swap search engines as required if I don't get all the results I'm hoping for.

It's been around a fair while; and it's built into Safari as one of the options under "Search Engine" (Safari > Preferences > Search).

I agree, Rod. There's no "perfect" browser. Each, of many, has its strengths and weaknesses.

So apparently Startpage has been acquired by or entered into some arrangement with a group that specializes in targeted advertising. As a consequence, privacy-minded watchdogs no longer recommend using Startpage. So DuckDuckGo it is.
